Chapter 5

CHAPTER 5 – Justice Begins (Part 1)

The conference room at the Dallas Police Department was unusually crowded.

Detective Sarah Collins stood at the front beside a large monitor while Assistant District Attorney Michael Reeves reviewed the growing stack of evidence. Around the table sat investigators from the financial crimes unit, domestic violence division, and cybercrime department. What had begun as a single assault case was rapidly expanding into something far larger.

Marcus connected his laptop to the monitor.

"I've brought the original video file exactly as it was received," he said. "No edits. No alterations."

Sarah nodded.

"Let's begin."

The forty-three-minute recording played from the start.

Nobody in the room spoke.

The officers watched Carmen enter the bridal suite.

They watched the property transfer documents appear.

They watched Sofia refuse to sign.

Then came the first slap.

One detective quietly clenched his jaw.

Another stopped taking notes altogether.

By the time the recording reached the twentieth minute, even the veteran investigators looked visibly disturbed.

When Javier's voice echoed through the speakers—

"Mom, don't hit her too hard in the face..."

Sarah immediately paused the video.

She turned toward the prosecutor.

"That establishes knowledge and participation."

Michael Reeves nodded.

"He wasn't an innocent bystander."

"He facilitated the assault."

The recording continued until the end.

When it finally stopped, silence filled the room.

Sarah slowly closed the laptop.

"I think we have probable cause."

Michael answered without hesitation.

"I think we have much more than that."

He opened a legal pad and began listing charges.

Aggravated assault.

False imprisonment.

Conspiracy.

Attempted extortion.

Witness intimidation.

Coercion.

Evidence tampering—pending further investigation.

The list grew longer with every minute.

Marcus leaned forward.

"There may also be additional victims."

Sarah looked up.

"What do you mean?"

Marcus explained everything Isabella had revealed about Carmen's so-called investment club and the previous daughters-in-law who had allegedly been pressured into surrendering assets.

The room became quiet again.

Michael tapped his pen against the table.

"If that's true..."

Sarah finished the thought.

"This isn't one violent night."

"It's a pattern."

...

Across the city, Sofia was finally discharged from the hospital.

She moved slowly, every step reminding her of the beating she had endured.

Alexander insisted on helping her into the car.

"You don't have to do everything yourself anymore," he said softly.

She gave him a weak smile.

"I guess I'm still getting used to having my dad back."

Those words struck him harder than any accusation could have.

During the drive home, neither of them spoke much.

Finally, Sofia broke the silence.

"Dad?"

"Yes?"

"Do you think I was stupid?"

Alexander looked at her.

"For loving Javier?"

She nodded.

"I ignored every warning."

Alexander sighed deeply.

"No."

"You trusted someone who promised to love you."

He paused before continuing.

"The people who betrayed that trust are the ones who should feel ashamed."

Tears filled Sofia's eyes once again.

For the first time since her wedding night, she believed those words.

...

Meanwhile, the atmosphere inside the Robles mansion had become unbearable.

News had not yet reached the public, but rumors were spreading among Dallas business circles.

Eduardo received another phone call.

Then another.

And another.

Every conversation ended the same way.

"We'll postpone."

"We'll reconsider."

"We'll wait until the investigation is over."

Millions of dollars in potential contracts were disappearing before lunchtime.

Eduardo slammed his phone onto the desk.

He turned toward Javier.

"Was any of this worth a condominium?"

Javier couldn't answer.

He hadn't slept.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Sofia kneeling on the hotel floor, begging for his help.

Her voice echoed endlessly in his mind.

"Javier... please..."

He rubbed his face with trembling hands.

"I never thought Mom would go that far."

Eduardo stared at his son in disbelief.

"You stood outside that door."

"I know."

"You heard her screaming."

"I know."

"And you did nothing."

Javier lowered his head.

There was nothing left to defend.

...

Just after three that afternoon, Detective Collins received another unexpected phone call.

"This is Sarah Collins."

A nervous female voice answered.

"My name is Vanessa Ortiz."

Sarah immediately opened a notebook.

"How can I help you?"

"I saw the news about a bride being assaulted."

Sarah remained calm.

"The investigation isn't public yet."

"I know."

"But I think..."

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"I think Carmen Robles did something similar to me four years ago."

Sarah exchanged a glance with another detective.

"What happened?"

"My husband is Carmen's cousin."

"I was locked inside a guest room during a family gathering until I agreed to sign over my jewelry business."

Sarah wrote quickly.

"Did you report it?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"They told me nobody would believe me."

A long pause followed.

"But after hearing what happened to Sofia..."

"I don't want to stay silent anymore."

Sarah thanked her and arranged an interview immediately.

Less than thirty minutes later, another call arrived.

Then another.

By sunset, three additional women had contacted the police.

Each story was different.

Yet all of them centered around the same woman.

Carmen Robles.

The investigators began building a timeline stretching back nearly seven years.

What they discovered was chilling.

Different victims.

Different properties.

Different family celebrations.

The same methods.

Isolation.

Intimidation.

Financial pressure.

Violence or threats.

Sarah quietly looked at Michael Reeves.

"This just became a serial financial abuse case."

Michael nodded grimly.

"And Sofia may be the first victim who escaped quickly enough to expose the entire operation."

...

As evening fell, Alexander stood alone on the balcony of Elena's apartment.

The city lights shimmered across the Dallas skyline.

He thought about the years he had lost.

The birthdays he had missed.

The father he had failed to be.

The balcony door slid open behind him.

Sofia stepped outside, wrapped in a blanket.

"You couldn't sleep either?"

Alexander smiled sadly.

"No."

She stood beside him.

"Everything feels unreal."

"I know."

She looked at the skyline.

"I keep wondering..."

"If I had signed those papers..."

Alexander turned toward her.

"You'd still be trapped."

She nodded slowly.

"And maybe another woman would become the next victim."

Alexander rested a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"You stopped that."

She frowned.

"I didn't."

"You did."

"You said no."

"You protected something much bigger than a condo."

Before Sofia could answer, Alexander's phone vibrated.

The caller ID displayed Detective Sarah Collins.

He answered immediately.

"Alexander."

Her voice was calm but carried unmistakable urgency.

"We've finished interviewing Isabella."

"And?"

"She wasn't the only one willing to talk."

Alexander felt his pulse quicken.

"How many?"

Sarah took a slow breath.

"As of tonight..."

"We have four additional victims."

She paused.

"And tomorrow morning..."

"We're requesting arrest warrants."

Alexander looked toward the dark skyline.

For the first time since Sofia arrived at Elena's door covered in blood, he felt that justice was no longer just a hope.

It was finally on its way.

And by sunrise, the Robles family would wake up to a very different world.
