Chapter 5 - The Desperate RetaliationWith Daniel in a federal holding cell and the family assets fully frozen, the Hawthorne empire evaporated within forty-eight hours. Evelyn and Marcy were evicted from the family mansion, forced to watch as movers packed up the artwork and luxury vehicles that had been purchased with Claire’s stolen inheritance.

Desperation turned the remaining Hawthornes dangerous. Evelyn, unable to accept her ruin, convinced Marcy that if they could destroy Claire’s public credibility, they could force a legal settlement to release some of the frozen funds.
On a rainy Thursday evening, Claire was leaving her office building, walking toward her parked car in the secure underground garage. The echoes of her heels sounded sharp against the concrete.
Suddenly, a figure stepped out from behind a concrete pillar. It was Marcy, her eyes bloodshot, wearing a stained coat, holding a heavy glass bottle in her hand. Behind her, Evelyn emerged from the shadows, her face twisted with a bitter, venomous hatred.
"You ruined us," Marcy screamed, raising the bottle. "You absolute bitch! You came into our family, pretended to be nothing, and then you stole everything we built!"
"I didn't steal anything, Marcy," Claire said, stopping, keeping her voice incredibly calm despite the danger. "I simply took back what your brother stole from my dead grandfather. You enjoyed the luxury while knowing exactly where the money came from."
"We built this city's elite!" Evelyn hissed, stepping closer. "You were nothing but a common girl Daniel brought home to show off. You think you’ve won? Let’s see how much the board likes you when you’re disfigured."
Marcy lunged forward, swinging the glass bottle directly at Claire’s face, aiming for the exact spot where the hot soup had burned her weeks before.
But Claire was no longer the isolated, terrified woman in the dining room. She had anticipated their desperation. She stepped swiftly to the left, dodging Marcy’s wild swing. At the same instant, the garage doors burst open.
Three security guards, accompanied by the building’s night patrol officers, flooded the area with bright flashlights.
"Drop the weapon! Step away from Ms. Sterling!"
Marcy froze, the bottle trembling in her hand as the bright lights blinded her. She looked at Claire, who stood completely unfazed, her security team instantly surrounding her.

"Evelyn, Marcy," Claire said softly, looking at the two women who had mocked her for years. "Did you really think I would walk around without protection after putting your son in jail? You always thought I was stupid. That was your biggest mistake."
The guards quickly disarmed Marcy and pinned both women against the police cruisers that had just pulled into the garage, their sirens painting the concrete walls in flashing red and blue.
