Chapter 4 - The Boardroom CoupThe noon emergency board meeting at Hawthorne Group was packed to capacity. Every major investor, board member, and senior partner sat around the massive oval table. Daniel sat at the head, sweating through his expensive Italian suit, trying desperately to maintain an aura of control.

"Gentlemen, ladies," Daniel started, clearing his throat. "The recent financial freeze is a temporary legal hurdle stemming from a domestic dispute with my estranged wife. It is a vindictive act by a bitter woman, nothing more. The Hawthorne Group remains solvent, and our assets are secure."
"Are they, Daniel?"
The double doors of the boardroom opened. Claire walked in, flanked by Julian Vance and two federal investigators from the financial crimes division. She was no longer wearing the stained blue dress. She wore a sharp, custom-tailored charcoal suit, her hair pulled back elegantly, fully exposing the small burn bandage on her temple—a silent, powerful testament to the violence she had endured.
The board members whispered intensely as Claire walked directly to the head of the table.
"Claire, you have no right to be here!" Daniel shouted, standing up, his chair rattling against the floor. "This is a private corporate matter!"
"Actually, Mr. Hawthorne, she has every right," Julian Vance announced, sliding a thick ledger across the table to the board’s chairman. "As of 9:00 AM this morning, the Sterling Trust has executed its default clause. Because Daniel Hawthorne utilized trust funds for unauthorized personal gains, the trust has seized the 51% controlling interest in the Hawthorne Group that was used as collateral for their operational loans."
The chairman looked at the documents, his face turning pale. He looked up at Claire. "Ms. Sterling... you are the sole trustee of the Sterling Trust."
"I am," Claire said, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the silent room. "And as the majority shareholder of this company, my first official act is to call for a vote to immediately terminate Daniel Hawthorne as CEO due to gross criminal misconduct and breach of fiduciary duty."
"You can't do this!" Daniel screamed, lunging across the table. But before he could get close, the two federal investigators stepped in front of him, their badges prominently displayed.
"Daniel Hawthorne," one of the investigators said, "you are under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and grand larceny. Please put your hands behind your back."
The board members watched in absolute horror and fascination as the handcuffs clicked around Daniel’s wrists. He looked back at Claire, his face distorted with rage, terror, and a sudden, devastating understanding of how completely he had underestimated her.

"You planned this," Daniel choked out as he was led away. "From the very beginning."
Claire didn't answer. She simply took the seat at the head of the table.
