Chapter 8 - The Restoration of RankThree days later, the parade deck was assembled once again. There were no banners, no celebratory music, and no triumphant speeches. The atmosphere was solemn, quiet, and heavy with a profound sense of justice.

The entire garrison stood at absolute attention. At the center of the formation stood Master Sergeant Miller and his five Marine survivors, their uniforms immaculate.
General Thomas stood at the podium, a large leather document folder in his hands.
"Personnel of this command," General Thomas announced, his voice carrying across the silent tarmac. "By order of the Secretary of the Navy and the President of the United States, the official records for Operation Obsidian Shield have been permanently corrected. The medals previously awarded to Adrian Holt and Silas Crane have been revoked, and their names have been struck from the rolls of honor in disgrace."
He took a deep breath, looking toward the side of the hangar. "Lieutenant Mara Vance, step forward."
Mara marched onto the parade deck. Her left hand still possessed that slight, permanent tremor—the physical reminder of the nerve damage from the blast—but her stride was flawless. Her head was held high, the desert sun illuminating the white gold of her uniform. She stopped exactly three paces from the General and saluted.
General Thomas returned the salute with a level of respect he rarely showed to anyone below the rank of admiral.
"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of her life above and beyond the call of duty," General Thomas read from the official citation, his voice echoing through the ranks of troops. "While serving as a Corpsman outside Sangin, Lieutenant Mara Vance did knowingly and repeatedly enter an active kill zone, utilizing her own body as a physical shield to protect six trapped infantrymen from a secondary white phosphorus explosion, and successfully extracted all six casualties under heavy enemy fire. Her actions reflect the highest credit upon herself and the United States Naval Service."
He stepped forward, pinned the Silver Star directly onto her chest, and then reached into his pocket, pulling out a set of gold Oak Leaf clusters.
"Furthermore," General Thomas smiled, pinning the new insignia onto her collar. "For exceptional clinical competence, leadership, and unyielding integrity under extreme duress, you are hereby promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, and appointed as the Chief Medical Logistics Officer for this entire regional command."
The moment the final insignia was secured, Master Sergeant Miller drew his ceremonial sword, raising it into the bright blue sky.

"Present arms!" Miller roared.
Hundreds of Marines, soldiers, and sailors across the parade deck moved in perfect unison, delivering a massive, deafening salute to the woman who had been erased, but who had finally returned to the light. Mara looked out at the sea of saluting troops, her eyes wet with tears, but her face was finally radiant with a beautiful, unshakeable peace.
