Chapter 7 - The Confrontation Behind Closed DoorsThe atmosphere inside the base's secure command briefing room was suffocating. General Thomas sat at the head of the long steel table, the unredacted documents and video depositions playing on the massive projector screen behind him.

Colonel Holt and Major Crane stood against the wall, stripped of their sidearms, guarded by two military police officers with drawn weapons. They looked like ghosts, their arrogance entirely drained away, replaced by the hollow, frantic terror of men who knew their lives were effectively over.

Mara stood at the opposite side of the table, her hands clasped behind her back, her eyes fixed forward with a calm, unbreakable dignity. I stood right beside her.

"I have spent thirty years in the United States military," General Thomas said, his voice trembling with a rare, controlled fury as he looked at the medical diagrams of Mara’s burns displayed on the screen. "I have seen combat, I have seen political infighting, and I have seen bad leadership. But I have never seen an act of cowardice as disgusting as what is laid out in these files."

He slammed his hand onto the table, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the enclosed room.

"You stole a Navy Corpsman's Silver Star," Thomas hissed, glaring at Holt. "You altered medical records, you falsified satellite logs, and you used your rank to terrorize a wounded service member into silence so you could collect a promotion and a pension. You aren't officers of the United States military. You are thieves."

"General, please," Major Crane whimpered, his knees shaking. "It was Holt’s plan. He told me that a female medic serving in an unauthorized vanguard role would cause a public relations disaster for the deployment matrix. He said we were protecting the command’s reputation!"

"You were protecting your own career, Silas!" Holt snarled, finally turning on his subordinate as the ship began to sink. "Don't pretend you didn't enjoy the prestige that came with that Silver Star!"

"Silence!" General Thomas roared. He stood up, walking slowly over to Colonel Holt. He reached out and, with a violent, tearing motion, ripped the Silver Star ribbon directly off Holt’s chest, throwing it onto the steel table. He turned to Crane and did the exact same thing.

"You are hereby stripped of your authority, your command, and your rank, pending immediate general court-martial for grand larceny, fraud, witness intimidation, and falsification of official records," General Thomas ordered. "The maximum penalty for these offenses under active deployment parameters is twenty years at the disciplinary barracks in Fort Leavenworth. Get them out of my sight."

As the military police dragged the two weeping men out of the room, General Thomas turned to look at Mara Vance. The sternness left his face, replaced by a profound, humbled respect. He picked up one of the discarded Silver Star ribbons from the table, looking at the polished metal.

"Lieutenant Vance," General Thomas said softly. "The United States military owes you an apology that words can never fully articulate. But we are going to start by correcting the record."
