Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the CrownGeneral Thomas stepped away from the podium, his face darkening into a terrifying mask of military authority. "Commander, explain yourself. Interrupting a promotion ceremony is a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. This better be a matter of life or death."

"It is a matter of honor, General," I said, stopping exactly ten paces from the stage and delivering a crisp, textbook salute. "I stand before you to report a massive, systemic breach of operational integrity, fraud against the United States government, and the deliberate concealment of an act of supreme valor."

Major Crane stepped forward, his voice dripping with desperation as he looked at General Thomas. "General, ignore this man! Commander Vance has been exhibiting signs of operational stress. He has formed an unhealthy, delusional obsession with an unstable nurse who was disciplined for psychological unfitness!"

"Shut your mouth, Major," General Thomas snapped, his voice quiet but lethal. He turned his gaze to me. "Present your evidence, Commander. And it better be ironclad."

I reached into my breast pocket and pulled out a secure, military-grade flash drive, holding it up for the General to see. "On this drive are the unredacted medical files of Patient Delta-09, the original, un-tampered satellite telemetry from the Sangin ambush, and six sworn affidavits from the actual survivors of that truck explosion."

I turned to look at Colonel Holt, whose hands were now shaking so violently he had to tuck them behind his back.

"Master Sergeant Miller," I called out. "Step forward."

Miller stepped out of our line, his chest high, looking directly at the General. "General Thomas, on August 14, 2024, Colonel Holt and Major Crane never left the tactical operation center. They arrived at the blast site forty-five minutes after the area was secured. The person who dragged my men through active machine-gun fire, who suffered catastrophic white phosphorus burns while using her own body to shield our ammunition cache, was Lieutenant Mara Vance."

The parade deck erupted into a chaotic storm of whispers.

General Thomas looked at Miller, then at the flash drive in my hand, and finally, his eyes locked onto Mara Vance. He noticed the stiff, deliberate way she held her left shoulder—the physical restriction caused by the massive scar tissue beneath her uniform.

"Colonel Holt," General Thomas said, his voice dropping to a register that made every officer on the stage turn pale. "Do you have an explanation for these allegations?"

May you like

"It’s... it’s a conspiracy, General," Holt stammered, the sweat pouring down his face, completely soaking his collar. "The records are clear. The official report was vetted by—"

"The official report was vetted by you, Colonel," General Thomas interrupted. He turned to his personal security detachment—four heavily armed military police officers standing at the base of the stage. "Secure that flash drive. And place Colonel Holt and Major Crane under immediate administrative arrest. We are moving this into the secure briefing room."
