Chapter 4 – The Trial of Truth

Chapter 4 – The Trial of Truth

The Palacio de Justicia was already surrounded by reporters before sunrise.

Television cameras lined the courthouse steps.

Journalists rehearsed their introductions while photographers waited with cameras aimed at the entrance.

The case had become national news.

A successful businessman.

A young mother who nearly died after childbirth.

A newborn left crying beside his unconscious mother.

And a birthday video that had spread across social media, showing a husband raising a glass while his wife fought for her life.

People across the country had already reached their own conclusions.

Now the court would decide the legal one.

Mariana stepped out of the car wearing a simple navy-blue dress.

She looked healthier than she had weeks before, though the experience had left visible shadows beneath her eyes.

She carried Mateo in her arms.

The little boy, now nearly two months old, slept peacefully against her shoulder.

Beside her walked Detective Elena Vargas and her attorney, Sofia Herrera.

"Are you ready?" Sofia asked quietly.

Mariana looked down at her son.

"No."

She smiled sadly.

"But I have to be."

Across the street, another black sedan stopped.

Raúl climbed out wearing an expensive tailored suit.

He had shaved carefully and styled his hair, hoping to appear calm and respectable.

Instead, he looked exhausted.

Weeks of public criticism had changed him.

His company had suspended him.

Several business partners had withdrawn their investments.

Friends who had celebrated with him in Valle de Bravo now refused to answer his calls.

Only his attorney, Luis Mendoza, remained beside him.

"Remember," Luis whispered.

"Control your emotions."

Raúl nodded.

Then his eyes found Mariana.

She didn't look at him.

Not once.

That hurt more than if she had screamed.

Inside the courtroom, silence settled over the audience.

Judge Carmen Salazar entered.

"Please be seated."

The courtroom obeyed.

The judge reviewed the case file for several moments before speaking.

"Today this court will hear evidence concerning allegations of criminal negligence, abandonment of a vulnerable adult, child endangerment, and related civil matters involving custody and divorce."

She looked toward both parties.

"Counsel, you may proceed."

Attorney Sofia Herrera stood first.

"Your Honor, this case is not simply about a marriage that failed."

She walked toward the jury.

"It is about choices."

She paused.

"One choice separated life from death."

Every juror watched silently.

"On the morning of May 14th, my client begged her husband for emergency medical assistance after suffering a severe postpartum hemorrhage."

She turned toward Raúl.

"He acknowledged her condition."

Another pause.

"He chose to leave anyway."

No one spoke.

Then Sofia placed a tablet on the evidence table.

"The prosecution would like to introduce Exhibit 27."

The lights dimmed.

The courtroom screen came alive.

Raúl's birthday video began to play.

Laughter echoed through the room.

Champagne glasses clinked.

Vanessa smiled beside him.

Then Raúl raised his glass.

"To surviving intense wives."

The laughter became louder.

"Sometimes a man has to choose himself."

The video ended.

Silence filled the courtroom.

Even the air seemed heavier.

The judge slowly removed her glasses.

Several jurors exchanged shocked glances.

One woman quietly wiped tears from her eyes.

Raúl couldn't look at the screen.

He stared at the floor.

Attorney Luis Mendoza rose.

"Your Honor, while the video demonstrates poor judgment, it does not establish criminal intent."

Judge Salazar nodded.

"Proceed."

Luis walked toward the witness stand.

"My client never intended to harm his wife."

"He believed postpartum bleeding was normal."

"He made a terrible mistake."

"But a mistake is not murder."

Sofia stood immediately.

"No one has accused him of murder."

She picked up Mariana's medical records.

"We accuse him of abandoning a woman whose condition any reasonable person would recognize as life-threatening."

She handed the records to the judge.

"The attending physician will testify."

Dr. Ricardo Benítez entered the witness stand.

He had treated Mariana the day she arrived.

Sofia approached him.

"Doctor, what was Mrs. Cárdenas's condition upon arrival?"

"Critical."

"Please explain."

"She had lost an extraordinary amount of blood."

"Without emergency surgery and multiple transfusions, she would have died."

The courtroom remained silent.

Luis stood.

"Doctor..."

"Could she have survived without treatment?"

The physician answered immediately.

"No."

"What if help had arrived later?"

The doctor took a slow breath.

"Another thirty to forty minutes..."

He looked toward the jury.

"...would almost certainly have been fatal."

Those words echoed through the courtroom.

Raúl closed his eyes.

He remembered laughing on the terrace at exactly that time.

The next witness surprised everyone.

"Call Isabel Romero."

The elderly neighbor walked confidently to the stand.

She swore the oath before sitting down.

Sofia smiled warmly.

"Mrs. Romero, please tell the court what happened."

Isabel described hearing Mateo cry continuously.

She described climbing through the kitchen window.

She described the smell of blood.

Then her voice trembled.

"I've delivered three children myself."

"I know what a mother sounds like."

She looked directly at Raúl.

"But no mother should ever have to call for help alone."

Several people in the audience lowered their heads.

Luis attempted to challenge her testimony.

"You disliked my client, didn't you?"

"No."

"You assumed the worst."

"No."

"You broke into his home."

"Yes."

"Without permission."

"I did."

Luis smiled slightly.

"So you committed a crime."

Isabel calmly answered,

"If saving two lives is a crime..."

She looked at the jury.

"...I'd do it again tomorrow."

The courtroom erupted in quiet murmurs.

Even Judge Salazar struggled to hide a faint smile.

Then came the witness no one expected.

"Call Vanessa Ruiz."

Every head turned.

Vanessa entered wearing sunglasses and a black business suit.

She looked nothing like the glamorous woman from the birthday video.

She removed her sunglasses before taking the oath.

Raúl stared at her in disbelief.

She wouldn't meet his eyes.

Sofia approached.

"Ms. Ruiz..."

"Did you have a romantic relationship with Mr. Cárdenas?"

Vanessa hesitated.

Then quietly answered,

"Yes."

Raúl's heart dropped.

"How long?"

"About eleven months."

The courtroom gasped.

Mariana remained perfectly still.

She had expected the truth.

Hearing it aloud still hurt.

Sofia continued.

"Were you aware his wife was pregnant?"

"Yes."

"Were you aware she had recently given birth?"

"...Yes."

"Were you present when Mr. Cárdenas received messages from his wife asking for help?"

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Yes."

The courtroom became completely silent.

"What did he say?"

She took a deep breath.

"He looked at his phone..."

Her voice cracked.

"...and said..."

She swallowed hard.

"'She always exaggerates.'"

Raúl whispered,

"Vanessa..."

She ignored him.

"He turned the phone face down."

"What happened next?"

Vanessa wiped away a tear.

"He ordered another bottle of champagne."

A wave of disbelief spread through the courtroom.

Luis buried his face in his hands.

His defense was collapsing.

The final witness of the day was forensic accountant Gabriel Ortega.

He displayed financial documents on the courtroom screen.

Bank statements.

Property transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Corporate expenses.

Then came the largest revelation.

"Mr. Ortega..."

Sofia asked.

"What did your investigation discover?"

Gabriel looked toward the judge.

"Over the last eighteen months..."

"...Mr. Cárdenas secretly transferred nearly four million pesos from company accounts into businesses controlled by his companion, Vanessa Ruiz."

The courtroom exploded with whispers.

Raúl shot to his feet.

"That's a lie!"

Judge Salazar struck her gavel.

"Order!"

Gabriel remained calm.

"We traced every transaction."

He displayed another slide.

"Additionally..."

"...we found draft legal documents prepared shortly before Mrs. Cárdenas gave birth."

The screen changed.

Power of attorney.

Property authorization.

Trust access.

"These documents would have granted Mr. Cárdenas complete control over his wife's inheritance."

Mariana stared at the screen in horror.

She had never known how close she had come to losing everything.

The judge called for a recess.

As everyone stood, Raúl looked desperately toward Mariana.

"Please..."

She finally looked at him.

For the first time since the nightmare began.

He searched her eyes for anger.

For hatred.

For anything.

Instead...

He found nothing.

No love.

No rage.

No hope.

Only indifference.

And somehow...

That hurt more than every accusation spoken inside the courtroom.

As deputies escorted Raúl toward a private conference room, Detective Vargas quietly approached Sofia Herrera.

"I just received another report."

Sofia frowned.

"What is it?"

The detective handed her a sealed envelope marked CONFIDENTIAL.

Inside was a DNA test.

Sofia's eyes widened.

"This changes everything."

"What does it say?" Mariana asked.

Sofia looked from the report to Mariana, then toward the closed door behind which Raúl waited.

She took a slow breath.

"It appears your husband has been hiding one more secret..."

"A secret that could destroy the last piece of his carefully constructed life."

Mariana's heart began to race.

May you like

She had believed she already knew the worst about the man she had married.

She was wrong.
