Chapter 2 – The Detective's Evidence

Chapter 2 – The Detective's Evidence
Raúl could barely feel his legs.
The detective stood silently at the front door while the two police officers behind her scanned the quiet house. Their eyes lingered on the dried bloodstain leading from the nursery toward the hallway.
She finally broke the silence.
"My name is Detective Elena Vargas."
Raúl swallowed hard.
"Please... tell me where my wife is."
The detective didn't answer immediately. Instead, she held out a clear evidence bag.
Inside was Mariana's wedding ring.
Raúl's heart skipped.
"What is this?"
"We found it beside the rocking chair."
His face turned white.
"No..."
"Mr. Cárdenas," Detective Vargas said calmly, "before I answer your questions, I need you to answer mine."
"I don't understand."
"You left your wife alone ten days after childbirth."
"I..."
"You knew she was bleeding."
"It wasn't that serious."
The detective raised an eyebrow.
"Is that what you believe?"
Raúl opened his mouth but no words came out.
One of the officers walked past him toward the nursery.
Within seconds his voice echoed through the hallway.
"Detective... you should see this."
Everyone entered the room.
The nursery looked frozen in time.
A baby bottle still rested on the small table.
A lullaby projector cast faded stars across the ceiling.
Tiny diapers were stacked neatly beside unopened packs of wipes.
Everything looked prepared for a family that had simply... vanished.
Only the dark stain on the cream-colored carpet reminded everyone what had truly happened.
The detective knelt beside it.
"Our forensic team estimates she lost a dangerous amount of blood right here."
Raúl stared at the floor.
"No..."
"She remained here for nearly forty minutes before anyone arrived."
His breathing became uneven.
"Who found her?"
Detective Vargas slowly stood.
"Your neighbor."
"...Neighbor?"
"Mrs. Isabel Romero."
Raúl frowned.
"She wasn't supposed to be home."
The detective looked directly into his eyes.
"Exactly."
Three days earlier...
Saturday afternoon.
Isabel Romero had been driving home after canceling a family trip.
Her husband had forgotten his medication, forcing them to return unexpectedly.
As she stepped out of her car, she heard something unusual.
A baby crying.
Not ordinary crying.
Desperate crying.
The kind that made every mother recognize danger.
She looked toward the Cárdenas house.
All the curtains were closed.
No lights.
No movement.
Still...
The crying continued.
Isabel frowned.
"That's strange."
She knew Mariana had just given birth.
The young woman was gentle, always smiling despite looking exhausted during pregnancy.
She also knew Raúl had left for his birthday vacation.
At first Isabel assumed Mariana was simply taking a shower.
But after fifteen minutes...
The crying hadn't stopped.
Instead...
It became weaker.
Almost exhausted.
A terrible feeling settled inside her chest.
She walked to the front door.
Knocked.
"Mariana?"
No answer.
She knocked again.
Louder.
Still nothing.
Then...
Silence.
The crying suddenly stopped.
Every instinct inside Isabel screamed that something was wrong.
She immediately called emergency services.
"I think someone inside needs help."
The dispatcher asked if she could see anyone through the windows.
"No."
"Can you hear movement?"
"No."
"Stay where you are. Officers are on the way."
But Isabel couldn't wait.
She walked around the side of the house.
One kitchen window had been left slightly open.
She climbed onto a flower bed and pushed herself inside.
The moment her feet touched the kitchen floor...
She smelled blood.
Metallic.
Heavy.
Wrong.
"Mariana?"
Nothing.
She hurried toward the hallway.
Then she saw it.
Drops of blood.
Leading toward the nursery.
"Oh God..."
She rushed inside.
Mariana lay unconscious beside the rocking chair.
Her skin was almost gray.
One arm stretched toward the empty bassinet.
Mateo was still there.
His tiny face was red from crying.
His little body trembled with exhaustion.
Without thinking, Isabel picked him up.
The baby immediately stopped crying.
He buried his tiny face against her shoulder.
Then Isabel looked back at Mariana.
The amount of blood terrified her.
She dropped to her knees.
"Mariana! Can you hear me?"
No response.
Barely breathing.
She checked for a pulse.
Weak.
Very weak.
Within minutes, paramedics burst through the front door.
One medic immediately took Mateo.
Another examined Mariana.
The lead paramedic looked up.
"Massive postpartum hemorrhage."
His partner's expression changed instantly.
"We're losing her."
"Start two IV lines."
"Blood pressure?"
"Dangerously low."
"Prepare blood products."
Everything happened at once.
Machines.
Needles.
Oxygen.
Commands shouted across the nursery.
One medic looked at Isabel.
"How long has she been like this?"
"I don't know... maybe an hour..."
The paramedic closed his eyes for one second.
"She's incredibly lucky."
"Lucky?"
"If you'd arrived thirty minutes later..."
He didn't finish the sentence.
He didn't need to.
Back in the present...
Raúl leaned against the nursery wall.
His knees felt weak.
"So... she's alive?"
The detective nodded once.
"Yes."
The word hit him like rain after weeks in the desert.
Alive.
Mariana was alive.
"And Mateo?"
"He's alive too."
Raúl covered his face.
Relief flooded through him.
But it lasted only seconds.
Because Detective Vargas continued.
"Your wife nearly died."
His hands slowly dropped.
"Doctors performed emergency surgery."
"What?"
"They transfused multiple units of blood."
Raúl stared at her.
"I... I didn't know."
"You didn't call."
"I thought—"
"You didn't answer."
"I believed she was exaggerating."
The detective's voice remained cold.
"She almost bled to death while your phone recorded videos of you drinking champagne."
Raúl closed his eyes.
Every word landed like a hammer.
The birthday toast.
The laughter.
Vanessa touching his collar.
His own voice mocking Mariana.
Suddenly the memory made him sick.
"I made a mistake."
Detective Vargas shook her head.
"No, Mr. Cárdenas."
She reached into another evidence folder.
This time she removed printed screenshots.
Hotel photos.
Restaurant receipts.
Social media posts.
Videos.
Time stamps.
Every hour of his birthday weekend.
Every moment he smiled.
Every toast.
Every expensive dinner.
Every luxury spa visit.
Every minute...
While Mariana fought to stay alive.
The detective placed the papers on the dining table.
"These aren't just vacation photos anymore."
Raúl looked down.
"They're evidence."
"Evidence?"
"In an active criminal investigation."
His breathing stopped.
"What investigation?"
The detective held his gaze.
"Possible criminal negligence... child endangerment... and abandonment of a vulnerable adult."
Silence filled the room.
Even the police officers said nothing.
Raúl felt as though the walls were closing in.
"I never wanted this."
Detective Vargas answered quietly.
"Intentions matter."
She paused.
"But actions matter more."
Then she handed him one final photograph.
It had been taken inside the intensive care unit.
Mariana lay unconscious beneath white hospital sheets.
Bruises covered one side of her forehead.
An oxygen tube rested beneath her nose.
Tiny Mateo slept inside a transparent hospital bassinet beside her bed.
His impossibly small hand rested against the glass, as though searching for the mother he had almost lost.
Raúl's hands began to tremble violently.
For the first time since leaving home...
He truly understood what his birthday had cost.
And somewhere across the city...
Inside a guarded hospital room...
Mariana slowly opened her eyes.
She remembered the blood.
She remembered Mateo crying.
She remembered the front door closing.
And the first words she whispered were not her husband's name.
May you like
They were:
"Please... don't let him take my son."
