Chapter 3 – Secrets Behind the Marriage

Chapter 3 – Secrets Behind the Marriage

The steady beeping of the heart monitor was the first sound Mariana truly recognized when she opened her eyes again.

For a moment, everything around her was white.

White ceiling.

White curtains.

White hospital sheets.

The smell of antiseptic filled the room.

She blinked several times before the memories crashed into her all at once.

The nursery.

The blood.

Mateo crying.

Raúl walking away.

The birthday video.

Her breathing quickened.

"My baby..."

A nurse immediately stepped beside her bed.

"Easy, Mariana. You're safe."

"My son... where is Mateo?"

"He's perfectly safe."

Tears rolled down Mariana's cheeks before the nurse could say another word.

"You both survived."

Those three words broke something inside her.

She covered her face and cried—not quietly, but with the heartbreaking sobs of a woman who had come within minutes of never seeing her child again.

A few moments later, the door opened.

An elderly woman walked in carrying the tiny bundle wrapped in a blue blanket.

"Look who's been waiting for his mommy."

It was Isabel Romero.

The same neighbor who had climbed through the kitchen window.

Mariana gasped.

"You..."

"You don't remember much, do you?"

Isabel smiled gently.

"I found you."

Mariana reached out with trembling hands.

The nurse carefully placed Mateo into her arms.

The newborn stirred slightly before opening his tiny eyes.

His little fingers instinctively wrapped around one of Mariana's.

Fresh tears streamed down her face.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered. "Mommy almost left you."

Mateo answered with a tiny yawn before falling asleep against her chest.

For the first time in days, Mariana allowed herself to breathe.

They were alive.

That was enough.

Or at least, she thought it was.

Later that afternoon, Detective Elena Vargas entered the room carrying a thick file.

"Mrs. Cárdenas."

Mariana looked up.

"I understand you've been through something unimaginable."

The detective pulled up a chair.

"But I need to ask you several questions."

Mariana nodded.

"I'll tell you everything."

She described the morning in painful detail.

The bleeding.

The dizziness.

Begging Raúl to call an ambulance.

His laughter.

His words.

"It's my birthday."

"Stop trying to ruin my weekend."

The detective remained expressionless, writing every sentence into her notebook.

When Mariana finished, silence filled the room.

Finally, Detective Vargas asked quietly,

"Has your husband ever abandoned you before?"

Mariana hesitated.

Then she looked down at Mateo.

"No."

Another pause.

"Not physically."

The detective raised an eyebrow.

"What do you mean?"

Mariana closed her eyes.

"For years... he abandoned me emotionally."

Three years earlier...

Raúl had been charming.

Attentive.

Successful.

Everyone admired him.

He remembered anniversaries.

Sent flowers.

Held doors open.

Called Mariana the love of his life.

Even her parents adored him.

The change had been gradual.

Almost invisible.

He started working late.

Then he criticized her cooking.

Her clothes.

Her friends.

Eventually...

He criticized her dreams.

"You don't need a career."

"I earn enough."

"Focus on supporting me."

When Mariana became pregnant, she believed everything would improve.

Instead...

Raúl became colder.

More distant.

More impatient.

Every doctor's appointment felt like an inconvenience to him.

Every craving annoyed him.

Every emotion became "drama."

The detective quietly interrupted.

"Did he control the finances?"

Mariana nodded.

"Everything."

"Your accounts?"

"He managed them."

"Your inheritance?"

Mariana looked surprised.

"How did you know about that?"

Detective Vargas slowly opened another folder.

"Because someone has been asking questions."

Across the city...

Raúl sat alone inside his lawyer's office.

His expensive watch suddenly felt heavier than ever.

Attorney Luis Mendoza removed his glasses.

"I need complete honesty."

"I've told you everything."

"No."

Luis leaned forward.

"You haven't."

Raúl avoided eye contact.

The attorney sighed.

"Police don't investigate attempted homicide without serious evidence."

"I didn't try to kill her."

"No."

Luis agreed.

"But abandoning a woman suffering postpartum hemorrhage..."

He let the sentence hang.

"...can still carry devastating legal consequences."

Raúl rubbed his forehead.

"I thought she'd be fine."

"You left."

"I had plans."

"You left."

"I needed one weekend."

"You left."

Every answer came back to the same truth.

There was nothing left to defend.

Then Luis asked a question Raúl hadn't expected.

"Who is Vanessa?"

Raúl froze.

"She's..."

"A business advisor?"

"...Yes."

Luis slid several printed photographs across the desk.

Raúl's stomach dropped.

Photos from the mountain resort.

Vanessa adjusting his sweater.

Holding his hand.

Leaning against him.

Entering his hotel suite.

Leaving the next morning.

One photograph showed them kissing on a balcony.

Raúl's face turned pale.

"Where did you get these?"

"The police didn't."

Raúl looked up.

"Then who?"

Luis folded his hands.

"A private investigator."

"Who hired one?"

The attorney remained silent.

Then quietly answered,

"Your wife."

Back at the hospital...

Detective Vargas carefully watched Mariana.

"You hired an investigator?"

Mariana nodded.

"I canceled him."

"Why?"

"I found out I was pregnant."

She smiled sadly at Mateo.

"I wanted my son to have a complete family."

The detective's expression softened.

"So you stopped looking."

"Yes."

"But the investigator didn't."

Mariana frowned.

"What?"

"He continued."

The detective opened the thick file.

Inside were months of surveillance reports.

Restaurant receipts.

Hotel reservations.

Photographs.

Bank transfers.

Phone records.

Mariana stared at them in disbelief.

"No..."

"I'm sorry."

The detective pushed one picture closer.

Raúl laughing with Vanessa.

Taken six months before Mateo was born.

Another.

Vacation together.

Another.

Holding hands outside an apartment building.

Mariana felt sick.

"He promised..."

She couldn't finish.

The detective quietly placed a hand over the file.

"There's more."

The next morning...

A man in an expensive gray suit arrived at the hospital.

"My name is Gabriel Ortega."

Mariana looked confused.

"I'm a forensic accountant."

"What does that mean?"

"I investigate financial fraud."

She frowned.

"I don't understand."

Gabriel opened his briefcase.

"I believe your husband has been stealing from you."

The room became completely silent.

"What?"

He removed several financial statements.

"Before your marriage, your grandfather established a trust."

Mariana nodded slowly.

"I know."

"Were you aware it became fully accessible after the birth of your first child?"

She blinked.

"No."

Gabriel nodded.

"I didn't think so."

He turned another page.

"The trust is worth nearly six million pesos."

Mariana stared at him.

"I've never touched it."

"No."

Gabriel answered quietly.

"But someone else has been preparing to."

He showed her copies of legal paperwork.

Powers of attorney.

Draft authorization forms.

Property transfer documents.

Every document required only one final signature.

Mariana's.

"I've never seen these."

"I know."

Gabriel looked directly into her eyes.

"Because they were never meant for you."

She felt ice spread through her body.

"What are you saying?"

"I believe your husband planned to convince you to sign everything after the baby was born."

"And then?"

Gabriel hesitated.

"Legally..."

"...he would have gained control over nearly all your assets."

Mariana couldn't speak.

Everything suddenly made terrible sense.

Raúl insisting she sign documents without reading them.

His constant pressure during pregnancy.

His unusual interest in her inheritance.

His sudden impatience after Mateo's birth.

None of it had been random.

That evening...

Raúl drove toward the hospital carrying flowers.

White roses.

Mariana's favorite.

He rehearsed his apology a hundred times.

"I made a mistake."

"I'm sorry."

"I'll change."

He almost believed the words himself.

But before reaching her room, two uniformed officers stepped into his path.

"Mr. Cárdenas?"

"Yes."

"You cannot enter."

"My wife is here."

"Not anymore."

"What?"

"Mrs. Cárdenas has requested police protection."

Raúl laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous."

One officer handed him an official document.

Emergency Protective Order.

His smile disappeared.

He read every line twice.

He was prohibited from contacting Mariana.

Prohibited from approaching the hospital.

Prohibited from removing Mateo from medical care.

His hands shook.

"This has to be a mistake."

"It isn't."

Then Detective Vargas appeared behind the officers.

She looked directly at him.

"Your wife is no longer afraid of dying."

Raúl swallowed.

"Good."

The detective took one slow step closer.

"She's afraid of surviving with you."

Those words hit harder than any accusation.

Raúl stood frozen in the hospital corridor, clutching the bouquet of white roses.

One by one...

The flowers slipped from his hands onto the polished floor.

No one bent down to pick them up.

As the elevator doors slowly closed between him and the woman he had almost lost forever, Raúl realized that asking for forgiveness would be the easiest battle ahead.

Because somewhere, hidden inside Detective Vargas's growing case file, was one final secret—

May you like

A secret so devastating that it would destroy not only his marriage...

But the carefully built empire he had spent years pretending was successful.
