Chapter 10 - The Promise KeptThe sun began to set over Mexico City, painting the sky in deep shades of orange, pink, and violet.

The family sat around the large wooden table in the garden, laughing and sharing the delicious food. There were no foam plates, no watery rice, and no dark corners behind the house. They sat in the center of their own paradise, illuminated by the warm glow of the garden lights.
After dinner, Valeria ran into the house and returned with a small, worn cardboard box.
"Daddy," she said, setting it on Diego’s lap. "We found this in the basement. It’s your old promise box."
Diego opened the box. Inside were the letters he had written to Mariana and the children during his first year in Texas, alongside a small, hand-drawn map of the mansion he had promised to buy them one day.
At the bottom of the box was the original house key Diego had kept in his pocket for five years.
Diego picked up the key, looking at its polished brass surface reflecting the light of the sunset. He looked at his beautiful wife, his healthy, happy children, and the home that was finally a true sanctuary.
"I kept my promise, didn't I?" Diego whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

Mateo climbed onto Diego’s lap, his small hands wrapping around his father’s neck. "You did, Daddy. You came back for us."
Diego pulled Mariana close, holding his family tight as the stars began to twinkle in the clear night sky above Lomas de Chapultepec. The long years of separation, the pain of betrayal, and the cold dark nights were gone forever. Ahead of them lay only a bright, beautiful horizon, built on a foundation of love, courage, and a promise that could never be broken.
