Chapter 4 - Secrets in the LibraryThe first week at the Costello estate settled into a strange, rhythmic routine.

While Gabriel spent his days locked away in his third-floor home office managing multi-million-dollar shipping logistics, real estate acquisitions, and delicate union negotiations, Chloe spent her hours with Beatrice.

They drank Earl Grey tea in the glass conservatory, strolled through the manicured rose gardens, and spent hours talking in fluid, silent sentences. For Chloe, signing with Beatrice felt like breathing air after holding her breath for two years. Every movement of the older woman’s hands reminded her of Leo—reminded her that communication didn't need a voice to carry a soul.

But beneath the peaceful surface of the estate, dark currents were moving.

It was a Thursday evening, past midnight, when Chloe padded softly down the grand staircase in her socks to grab a glass of water from the kitchen. The main house was entirely dark, bathed in the pale moonlight filtering through the high clerestory windows.

As she passed the entrance to the western wing—the area Gabriel had explicitly declared off-limits—she noticed a thin sliver of warm light spilling across the polished oak floorboards from the eastern library.

Curiosity killed the cat, a voice in her head whispered. But the memory of Gabriel’s cold warnings and the whispers she had overheard at Il Canto pushed her forward.

She crept silently down the hallway, pressing her back against the dark mahogany wall near the library door.

Inside, voices murmured in tense, urgent tones.

“...the shipment from Marseille is compromised,” a rough voice muttered—not Gabriel, but one of his senior lieutenants, a man named Vincent Rossi. “If the federal task force intercepts the containers at the Port of Newark, our entire distribution network goes down before the end of the quarter.”

Gabriel’s voice cut through the room, cold as winter steel.

“They won't intercept it. I rerouted the manifest through the independent terminals in Brooklyn three hours ago.”

“And what about the mole inside the syndicate?” Rossi pressed. “Vance has been feeding internal memos to the district attorney for months. If we don't find out who’s leaking our financial ledgers, the whole house of cards collapses.”

A heavy silence followed inside the library.

Chloe’s breath hitched in her throat. She backed away slowly, her socked feet making zero sound against the floorboards. She turned to retrace her steps toward the stairs.

Clink.

Her elbow brushed against a heavy brass floor lamp standing near a mahogany console table, sending it swaying with a sharp metallic ring.

Inside the library, the murmurs stopped instantly.

Heavy footsteps strode toward the door with terrifying speed.

Before Chloe could take another step, the library door swung wide open. A massive hand shot out from the shadows, grabbing her forearm with an iron grip and yanking her bodily into the dark, wood-paneled room.

The door slammed shut behind them with a muffled click.

Chloe stumbled, her back colliding hard against the locked door. When she looked up, Gabriel Costello was standing mere inches away, his dark eyes burning with dangerous intensity, pinning her against the wood.

“What were you doing outside my door, Chloe?” Gabriel whispered, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage.

Rossi stood near the mahogany desk in the background, his hand resting ominously inside his suit jacket near a concealed shoulder holster.

Chloe’s heart hammered against her ribs like a jackhammer, but she forced her voice to remain steady, looking straight up into Gabriel’s furious face.

“I was thirsty, Mr. Costello,” Chloe whispered back, refusing to let him see her terror. “Last time I checked, walking to the kitchen for a glass of water wasn't a federal offense.”

Gabriel’s gaze searched her face, looking for any sign of deception. His grip on her forearm was so tight she knew it would leave bruises tomorrow.

“You heard them,” Rossi said, stepping forward, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. “She heard about the Newark manifest. She’s a spy planted by a rival family, or worse—a federal informant.”

Gabriel didn't look at Rossi. He kept his eyes locked on Chloe.

“Are you an informant, Chloe?” Gabriel asked quietly, his voice dropping into a register that sent a shiver straight down her spine.

“If I was an informant,” Chloe fired back, her gray eyes flashing with sudden, sharp anger, “do you really think I’d be stupid enough to drop a brass floor lamp in a silent hallway? Let go of my arm, Gabriel.”

She used his first name for the very first time.

The room went dead silent. Rossi’s hand tightened around his gun.

Gabriel stared at her, the dark storm in his eyes warring with a sudden, unexpected realization. Slowly, deliberately, his fingers uncurled from her arm, releasing her skin.

“Get out,” Gabriel said to Rossi without breaking eye contact with Chloe.

Rossi hesitated. “Boss—she knows too much—”

“I said, get out,” Gabriel repeated, his voice rising with chilling authority.

Rossi swallowed hard, turned on his heel, and slipped out through a private side exit, leaving Chloe and Gabriel alone in the dimly lit library.

Chloe rubbed her bruised arm, glaring at him. “You’re a paranoid, dangerous monster, you know that?”

Gabriel didn't yell. He didn't threaten her. He simply walked back to his desk, poured two fingers of amber bourbon into a crystal glass, and stared down into the liquor.

“If you stay in this house, Chloe, you are walking through a minefield,” Gabriel said, his voice heavy with an exhaustion that went bone-deep. “My enemies aren't just corporate rivals. They’re killers. If they find out you know about the syndicate, or if they find out how close you’ve gotten to my mother... they won't hesitate to use you to break me.”

Chloe looked at him—at the billionaire kingpin reduced to a tired, hunted man trapped by his own legacy.

“Then maybe you should stop fighting everyone alone,” Chloe said softly, the anger draining from her voice, replaced by a sudden, dangerous tenderness.

Gabriel looked up, his dark eyes locking onto hers across the quiet room.
