Chapter 3 - Inside the Costello FortressThe iron security gates of the Costello estate in Westchester swung open like the jaws of a medieval fortress.

When Gabriel’s black armored sedan rolled up the quarter-mile winding driveway, surrounded by towering iron pines and discreet security cameras perched on every branch, Chloe gripped the leather strap of her handbag so tightly her knuckles turned white.

She wasn't just working for a high-society family anymore. She had stepped directly into the engine room of New York’s underworld elite.

The car glided to a halt in front of a sprawling limestone mansion that looked more like a European museum than a family home. Before Chloe could even reach for the door handle, a towering man in a charcoal suit had already pulled it open, standing at rigid attention.

“Welcome to the estate, Ms. Bennett,” the guard rumbled respectfully—an immediate indicator that Gabriel had already briefed his entire security detail that she was under his direct protection.

As Chloe stepped out into the crisp morning air, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion swung wide open.

There stood Beatrice Costello, wrapped in a plush cashmere shawl, her silver hair perfectly styled, and a bright, triumphant smile spread across her wrinkled face.

Before Chloe could take a step toward the steps, Beatrice was already signing furiously with both hands.

You took your sweet time! I told Gabriel to pick you up at dawn!

Chloe laughed out loud, walking up the stone steps and signing back with fluid, practiced grace.

Traffic on the West Side Highway is a nightmare, Beatrice. Even for billionaires.

Beatrice’s eyes crinkled with pure delight. She grabbed Chloe by both hands, pulling her past the bewildered guards and straight into the grand marble foyer.

Gabriel walked in behind them, carrying Chloe’s single modest suitcase with an air of casual nonchalance that felt completely surreal for a man who controlled half the shipping ports on the East Coast.

“Your room is on the second floor, down the hall from my mother’s suite,” Gabriel said, setting the suitcase down near the grand staircase. “The security perimeter is locked down twenty-four hours a day. You have full clearance for the main house, the conservatory, and the eastern library. The western wing is off-limits.”

Chloe looked around the opulent foyer, taking in the crystal chandeliers, the priceless oil paintings, and the heavy silence that hung over the halls like a shroud.

“A golden cage,” Chloe murmured quietly, forgetting for a second that Gabriel was standing right there.

Gabriel’s dark eyes fixed on her, sharp and unreadable.

“It’s not a cage, Ms. Bennett,” Gabriel said coldly. “It’s armor. In my world, if you don't build walls high enough, the people who want to destroy you will reach your family before you can stop them.”

Beatrice caught the tail end of their exchange. Her hands flew up in a sharp, dismissive gesture.

Don't listen to him, Chloe! He sounds like an aging mafia boss in a bad movie! He just likes locking things up because he’s terrified of losing control!

Chloe bit her lip to keep from laughing out loud at the blunt accuracy of Beatrice’s translation.

Gabriel pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a long, heavy sigh. He couldn't understand the signs, but he knew enough of his mother’s body language to know she was insulting him.

“Did she just insult my wardrobe or my personality?” Gabriel asked dryly, looking directly at Chloe.

“Both, Mr. Costello,” Chloe answered without missing a beat. “She said you sound like an aging mob boss and that you’re terrified of losing control.”

Gabriel stared at Chloe for a long second, his jaw tightening. Then, unexpectedly, the corner of his mouth twitched upward into a very rare, very genuine half-smile.

“Remind me to dock your pay for insubordination, Ms. Bennett.”

“You have to pay me first, Mr. Costello,” Chloe retorted, holding his gaze without flinching.

May you like

Beatrice clapped her hands together in absolute glee, signing rapidly to Chloe:

I love her. Keep him humble, child. Nobody else in this house has the spine to do it.
