Chapter 6 - The Trial and the SettlementThe courtroom was packed three months later. The case had drawn significant media attention—a high-profile corporate executive surviving domestic abuse and white-collar fraud.

Daniel sat in a orange jumpsuit, his head bowed. Next to him, Vanessa looked equally defeated, her glamorous facade completely stripped away by ninety days in a county holding facility.
Claire took the stand. The scar on her jaw was fainter now, thanks to excellent medical care, but she chose not to wear makeup to cover it. She wanted the judge and the jury to see exactly what Daniel’s "obedience" looked like.
She spoke for two hours, her voice clear, calm, and utterly devoid of fear. She detailed the emotional manipulation, the financial theft, and finally, the morning the scalding coffee tore through her life.
When the defense attorney tried to suggest that Claire had been vindictive in freezing the assets, Miriam Cole stood up, presenting the definitive evidence: Vanessa’s personal journal, seized during the arrest, which explicitly detailed their plan to systematically drain Claire’s inheritance and leave her destitute once the beauty studio was fully funded.
The jury took less than forty-five minutes to deliberate.
"On the counts of aggravated domestic battery, corporate fraud, and grand larceny, we find the defendants guilty on all charges."
The judge, a stern woman with no tolerance for domestic violence, looked down at Daniel.

"Mr. Vance, your actions demonstrate a profound lack of humanity and respect for the law. You utilized violence as a tool of compliance. You are sentenced to eight years at a maximum-security state penitentiary, with no option for early parole. Ms. Vanessa Vance, for your active participation in the conspiracy and theft, you are sentenced to three years."
As Daniel and Vanessa were led away in chains, Daniel looked back at Claire one last time. But Claire wasn't looking at him. She was already gathered her documents, looking forward toward the exit. He was no longer her nightmare; he was just a closed chapter.
