Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses"This is a conflict of interest!" Daniel shouted, slamming his hands on the table. "Marcus, she’s doing this out of spite! We’re going through a separation. She’s using her position to attack my career!"

Claire finally turned her gaze to him. The coldness in her eyes made him flinch.

"Mr. Vance," Claire continued, ignoring Daniel entirely. "Vanguard Lending conducts strict ethical and risk-management assessments on all corporate clients. Over the last forty-eight hours, our compliance team discovered that one of your senior account directors—Daniel—has been utilizing company-issued devices to coordinate unauthorized financial transfers from private trusts."

She slid a document across the table to the CEO.

"Furthermore," Claire added, "there is an active criminal investigation against Daniel for felony domestic assault, aggravated battery, and grand larceny. As a result, Vanguard cannot risk its capital on an entity employing individuals facing imminent indictment."

Marcus Vance looked at the documents, then at the police report, and finally at Daniel’s pale, sweating face. The burn on Claire’s face was undeniable visual proof of the violence.

"Daniel," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Is this true?"

"Marcus, listen to me, she’s framing me! The coffee was a slip! She’s crazy!"

"Get out," Marcus said quietly.

"Marcus—"

"Get the hell out of my building, Daniel. You’re terminated immediately for gross misconduct. Security, escort him out."

As the security guards grabbed Daniel’s arms, he looked back at Claire, his face distorted with rage and terror. "You think you’ve won, Claire? You think you can ruin my life? You’re nothing without me! I made you!"

Claire didn't blink. She waited until the doors slammed shut behind him before turning back to the CEO. "Now, Mr. Vance, let’s discuss how we can restructure your company’s line of credit—minus the dead weight."

While Daniel was being escorted out of his office in disgrace, Vanessa was facing her own nightmare. She arrived at the site of her new beauty studio only to find the landlord waiting outside with two police officers.

"What’s going on?" Vanessa demanded, her designer handbag swinging from her arm. "I’m here to sign the final lease."

"Ms. Vance," the officer said, stepping forward. "We have a warrant for your arrest regarding grand larceny and receiving stolen property, linked to unauthorized bank transfers totaling eighty-five thousand dollars from the estate of Arthur Sterling."

"This is a mistake!" Vanessa screamed as the metal handcuffs clicked around her wrists. "My brother gave me that money! It’s family money!"

"Your brother didn't own it," the officer replied coldly, leading her toward the squad car while onlookers stopped to film the scene on their phones.
