Chapter 5 - The RetaliationDesperation makes people dangerous. Deprived of his job, his money, and his sister’s freedom, Daniel spiraled into an alcohol-fueled rage. He knew he was facing jail time. His lawyer told him the evidence was airtight—between the forensic accounting trail and the medical records, a plea deal was his only hope to avoid a five-year sentence.

But Daniel didn't want a plea deal. He wanted revenge.
He knew Claire was staying at a boutique hotel downtown near her attorney’s office. On a rainy Thursday evening, six weeks after the breakfast incident, Daniel waited in the underground parking garage of the hotel. He had slipped past the broken security gate, a heavy iron tire iron concealed under his coat.
At 8:30 PM, the elevator doors opened. Claire walked out, talking on her phone with Miriam.
"Yes, Miriam, the final divorce papers are signed on my end. We just need the judge to—"
She stopped. The sound of heavy, uneven footsteps echoed in the concrete garage.
"Claire..." a voice whispered from the shadows.
She turned around, her heart stopping. Daniel stepped into the dim fluorescent light. His clothes were disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, and he smelled strongly of whiskey.
"Daniel," Claire said, keeping her voice level, though her hand trembled against her phone. "Miriam, call the police right now," she whispered into the line before dropping the phone onto the ground.
"You took everything from me," Daniel growled, raising the iron bar. "My career, my house, my sister. You think you’re a big executive now? Let’s see what you look like when I’m done with you."
He lunged forward.
Claire didn't freeze. The past six months of reclaiming her life had given her something she never had during their marriage: the instinct to fight back. She dodged to the right, Daniel’s heavy bar striking the concrete pillar with a deafening metallic clang.
Daniel swung again, catching Claire’s shoulder. She cried out in pain, stumbling against her car. He grabbed her by the throat, pinning her against the driver’s side door.
"You should have just given her the card," he hissed, his face inches from hers. "You should have obeyed."
Claire looked directly into the eyes of the man who had terrorized her for years. With all the strength she had left, she brought her heel down hard on his foot, simultaneously driving her car keys directly into his throat.
Daniel gasped, releasing his grip as he choked and stumbled backward.
Before he could recover, the screech of tires echoed through the garage. Two police cruisers tore around the corner, their sirens wailing, blinding him with their headlights. Officers flooded the area with drawn weapons.

"Drop the weapon! Get on the ground now!"
Daniel looked at Claire, who stood bruised but unbroken against the car. Realizing it was truly over, the iron bar clattered to the floor, and he sank to his knees, weeping hoarsely as the officers slammed him onto the cold pavement.
