Chapter 8 - Shadows of the PastWhile the Bellacorte empire flourished under a new era of transparency and justice, miles away in a sterile, fluorescent-lit federal holding facility near the state line, the ghosts of the past were tearing themselves apart.

In the inmate visiting room, separated by a thick sheet of reinforced Plexiglas, Mark Bellacorte sat in a coarse orange jumpsuit, his hair graying prematurely, his eyes sunken and hollow.
Across from him sat Claudia, similarly dressed in prison grays, her face devoid of makeup, her manicured nails gone, reduced to the bitter reality of a twenty-year federal sentence for wire fraud, forgery, and child endangerment.
“It’s all your fault,” Claudia hissed through the metal intercom grill, her voice trembling with venomous rage. “If you hadn't botched the offshore accounts, if you had stood up to your father instead of cowering like a dog, we wouldn't be rotting in this hellhole!”
“My fault?” Mark laughed bitterly, a harsh, grating sound that bounced off the cinderblock walls. “You’re the one who threw a three-year-old child out into the snow like a bag of trash! You’re the one who couldn't keep your greed in check!”
“Shut up! Just shut up!” Claudia screamed, slamming her fist against the Plexiglas partition.
A prison guard stepped forward immediately, tapping his baton against the metal door. “Keep your voice down or visitation is terminated.”
Claudia slumped back into her chair, chest heaving, tears of pure fury and self-pity spilling down her cheeks. She looked through the glass at the pathetic shell of the man she had married for his money.

They had possessed everything—wealth, status, luxury, an entire global empire waiting for their command. And they had thrown it all away because they were too blind to see that a child’s love is worth more than all the gold in the mountains.
Now, they had nothing left except each other—and the endless, suffocating silence of their own ruin.
