Chapter 6 - The Dawn After the AvalancheThe morning sun rose over the snow-draped peaks of the Colorado Rockies, casting a brilliant, blinding golden light across the pristine white slopes of the Blackwood estate. The storm had broken, leaving behind a crisp, silent world where the air was so sharp it felt like crystal in the lungs.

A fleet of federal black SUVs and emergency rescue vehicles idled at the base of the main driveway, their tires churning through the deep snow drifts.

Inside the grand lodge, the atmosphere was calm, orderly, and entirely transformed.

In the sunny breakfast conservatory overlooking the valley, little Noah sat in a high chair provided by the staff, happily spooning oatmeal into his mouth while wearing clean, warm clothes and a bright red sweater. He clutched his handmade wooden airplane proudly in his left hand, occasionally making roaring sounds as he flew it through the air.

Richard sat across from him, sipping black coffee, a gentle, protective smile resting on his weathered face.

The heavy glass doors opened, and Rossi stepped into the conservatory, walking with measured steps toward the table. He stood at attention, removing his cap.

“Mr. Bellacorte,” Rossi reported quietly, ensuring Noah didn't hear the grim details. “Mountain rescue and the state troopers cleared the rubble from the collapsed sector of the old service tunnel at first light. It took three hours to dig through the slide.”

Richard looked up, his blue eyes steady. “And?”

“They found them, sir,” Rossi said, lowering his voice. “Mark and Claudia... they suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the debris field. Mostly severe hypothermia, shock, and a few broken bones. The state troopers have already placed them under formal arrest on federal warrants for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and forgery. They’re being transported to the county detention center as we speak.”

Richard took a slow sip of his coffee, gazing out at the endless mountain vista. A profound sense of closure settled over him—not of joy, but of a heavy burden finally lifted from his shoulders.

“Did they say anything?” Richard asked.

“Mark tried to demand a phone call to his legal counsel,” Rossi replied with a faint trace of dry sarcasm. “Claudia... well, she was too busy screaming about her designer handbag being ruined in the mud to say much of anything coherent.”

Richard nodded slowly. He set his coffee cup down on the saucer with a soft clink.

“Let the legal team proceed with full prosecution,” Richard said, his voice absolute. “No plea deals. No reduced sentences. Every penny they stole from the corporate reserves will be recovered and placed into Noah’s trust.”

“Understood, sir,” Rossi said, turning to depart.

As Rossi walked away, Noah looked up from his wooden airplane, locking his bright blue eyes onto his grandfather. The little boy reached across the table, grabbed Richard’s weathered thumb with his small hand, and gave it a reassuring squeeze.

Richard’s hardened heart melted completely. He leaned forward, kissing the top of the boy’s soft silver-blonde hair.

“You and I are going to build a real airplane, Noah,” Richard whispered softly, a warm smile touching his lips. “A big one. One that can fly all the way to the stars.”

Noah giggled, holding up his crude wooden toy as if it were already soaring above the clouds.
