Chapter 2 - The Roots of BetrayalThe heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom clicked shut, sealing out the murmurs of the terrified guests who had quickly scattered to the corners of the room like mice before a hawk. Only Richard, Mark, Claudia, and two armed private security guards remained standing near the roaring fireplace.

The heat from the hearth radiated outward, but Mark felt as though he had been plunged into an icy lake. Sweat beaded along his hairline, staining the collar of his expensive dress shirt.
“Dad, this is completely absurd,” Mark stammered, trying desperately to regain an aura of corporate authority, though his voice cracked at the edges. “You’re making a scene over a brat’s toy. Claudia was just stressed out. You know how demanding the social season is in Aspen.”
Claudia stood beside her husband, her fingernails digging so hard into the delicate silk of her handbag that the seams threatened to rip. Her eyes darted anxiously toward the small wooden airplane sitting innocently on the edge of the mahogany banquet table.
Richard didn't yell. His silence was infinitely more terrifying than any explosion of rage. He walked slowly toward the table, his footsteps echoing in the cavernous room. He reached out, his weathered, powerful fingers wrapping around the rough-hewn wooden toy.
“You called him a brat, Mark,” Richard said quietly, his gaze fixed on the clumsy wings of the airplane. “He is three years old. He is your son. My flesh and blood. And you treated him like an animal chained in a kennel while you hosted parties in my mountain lodge.”
“He’s not normal!” Claudia blurted out, her composure finally cracking under the immense pressure. She stepped forward, her voice rising hysterically. “He cries all day! He doesn't fit into our lives! We gave him food and a roof over his head in the east wing quarters, what more do you want?”
Richard slowly lifted his eyes from the wooden toy and locked them onto Claudia.
“I want the truth,” Richard said softly. “And we are going to start with a very simple question. How long has my grandson been living in torn clothes and freezing isolation while you two drained the family accounts to fund your private Swiss bank accounts?”
Mark flinched as if he had been struck across the face. He shot a furious glare at Claudia for speaking out, then scrambled to salvage the narrative.
“Dad, you’re listening to the ramblings of a senile old man—I mean, you’re exhausted, the altitude is getting to you,” Mark corrected himself too late, tripping over his own panic. “We haven't touched the primary trust funds without authorization!”
“Is that so?” Richard reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a thick manila folder, tossing it onto the table directly in front of Mark.
The papers spilled out. Bank statements. Offshore wire transfers. Real estate purchases in the Cayman Islands registered under shell companies bearing Claudia’s maiden name.
Mark stared at the documents, his breath catching in his throat. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse in a tailored suit.
“For the past three years,” Richard continued, his voice dropping an octave, “while I believed my son was running the North American division with integrity, you’ve been systematically looting forty-two million dollars from the corporate reserves. You thought I was slowing down. You thought my eyesight was failing.”
“Dad, let me explain!” Mark lunged forward, his hands trembling as he reached for the folder. “It was just a temporary liquidity bridge for the venture capital firm in Zurich! It was an investment—it was supposed to pay off tenfold!”
“It was treason,” Richard corrected coldly.
Claudia’s eyes darted frantically around the room. She realized the financial embezzlement was bad, but she knew something far worse—something that was currently hidden inside the very toy resting in Richard’s hand.
Months ago, when Mark discovered that Richard was quietly rewriting his final will and testament to leave the controlling shares of Bellacorte Industries directly to little Noah upon his eighteenth birthday (with Richard managing the trust until then), Mark and Claudia had panicked. They had drafted a fraudulent amendment—a forged revocation document transferring all voting shares to Mark immediately—and hidden it in the one place they thought nobody of high society would ever look: inside a discarded wooden toy box in the servants' wing.
Noah, innocent and loving, had somehow found it, thought it was part of his airplane project, and carved the wood around it, wrapping it up as a birthday gift for his grandfather, entirely unaware of the deadly corporate warfare waging around him.
Richard felt the unusual weight distribution of the wooden airplane. He noticed a tiny, almost invisible seam running along the fuselage, sealed with household wood glue.
“What’s this?” Richard muttered, his thumb tracing the seam.
Claudia lunged forward with a piercing shriek. “No! Don't touch it!”
Before Claudia could reach the table, one of Richard’s security guards stepped forward with lightning speed, pinning her arms behind her back and forcing her down against the edge of the table.
“Get your hands off me!” Claudia screamed, thrashing wildly, her mascara running down her cheeks. “Mark, do something! Stop him!”
Mark stood frozen, paralyzed by the sheer terror of what was about to be uncovered.
Richard looked at Claudia’s hysterical panic, then down at the wooden toy in his hand. With a firm, deliberate twist of his thumbs, the wooden fuselage snapped open along the hidden seam.
A folded piece of heavy legal parchment slid out onto the polished mahogany table.
Richard unfolded it. His eyes scanned the first two lines, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop below freezing.
It was a forged power of attorney and a forged revocation of the true trust, bearing forged signatures of Richard Bellacorte himself, notarized by a corrupt firm in downtown Denver that Richard had never heard of.
Richard looked up slowly. His eyes burned with a fire that could melt steel.
“You didn't just starve my grandson,” Richard whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, controlled fury. “You tried to steal my entire empire, forge my signature, and leave me legally dead before my time.”

Mark dropped to his knees on the hardwood floor, burying his face in his hands as the full weight of the avalanche crashed down upon him.
The game was over.
