I rose further in the ranks, eventually receiving a commendation for my role in the federal investigation that had dismantled the shadow network Daniel had been involved in.

I was at a formal military ceremony, the air filled with the pride and honor of a life well-lived, when I saw a familiar face across the room. It was Detective Miller.
He walked over, his eyes twinkling. "Colonel. It’s good to see you in your element."
"Detective. What brings you here?"
"Just checking in on the case. Or rather, checking in on the survivors of the case. I heard the kids are doing great."
"They are," I said, smiling. "They’re ten now. Ethan is interested in engineering, and Grace... Grace is already asking questions about the military. She wants to be a pilot."
"Like her mother," he nodded. "You know, the house you saved? It was eventually sold to a family of teachers. They’re happy there. It’s a good house again."

I realized then that I had finally achieved what I had been searching for all those years ago. I had my family, I had my purpose, and I had my truth. The house, the money, the status—it had all been a test. A test of my character, and a test of my resolve. And I had passed.
