Chapter 8 - The Echo of the PastLife as a high-ranking officer had its own challenges, but for the first time, I was working with people who respected my rank, my history, and my integrity. My team consisted of individuals who had also seen the world for what it was, and there was a silent, mutual understanding between us that I had never found in my marriage.

However, the past has a way of lingering. I received a letter from prison. It was from Daniel. It was long, rambling, and filled with a desperate attempt at contrition that felt as hollow as his promises had during our marriage.

I know I messed up, Claire. I know I didn't see you. Please, just come visit. I need someone to talk to.

I burned the letter without reading the second page.

It wasn't that I was heartless. It was that I had finally learned the lesson that the military teaches early on: you cannot fix what is fundamentally broken. Daniel was a man who wanted to be a king without ever learning how to lead. He was a man who wanted a wife without ever learning how to be a husband.

He was a ghost. And I was no longer interested in haunted houses.

I focused on my children. I read them stories about heroes—the real kind, the ones who didn't look for praise, the ones who did the work because it was necessary. I was raising them to be strong, independent, and above all, honest. They would never be caught in the web of a lie, because their mother would teach them how to see through it.
