Chapter 10 - The Sunlight of Federal HillThree months later, the spring had arrived in Providence with a soft, beautiful vengeance. The rain-slicked winters had melted into warm, golden afternoons that smelled of blooming lilacs, fresh espresso, and the rich, comforting scent of garlic and basil drifting out onto the sidewalks of Federal Hill.

Osteria Luna had been completely rebuilt. The historic plaster molding had been restored by Italian artisans, the dark wood booths had been polished until they shone like mirrors, and a beautiful, massive new glass display case stood near the entrance, filled with thousands of bottles of the finest vintage wines the world had to offer.
It was a Thursday night, precisely thirty minutes after sunset. The restaurant was packed to capacity, a lively, joyful roar of conversation and clinking glasses filling the warm, amber space.
At the back corner booth—the one facing both exits—sat Ronan Vale. He wasn't wearing his black coat or his tailored suit. He wore a simple, dark grey linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, his dark hair falling naturally across his forehead. He was laughing—a genuine, deep, resonant sound that made the regulars at the surrounding tables stop and stare with a look of pure, joyful disbelief.
Elena appeared from the kitchen doors, carrying a heavy silver tray. She didn't use the side door; she walked right through the center of the dining room with a fluid, confident grace that drew the eyes of everyone in the room. She wore a beautiful, emerald-green silk dress that complemented the brilliant color of her eyes, her dark hair pinned loosely at the back of her head with a silver clip.
She stopped at his table, setting down a single, pristine plate of handmade ravioli in brown butter sauce, followed by a fresh bottle of Cabernet.
"No spills tonight," she teased, her green eyes flashing with that same stubborn, brilliant sunlight that had saved him from the dark. "See? Absolute growth."
Ronan reached up, his large, scarred hand wrapping gently around her fingers, stopping her before she could step away. He looked up at her, his grey eyes full of a profound, beautiful warmth that had completely transformed his face.
"Stay for dinner," he whispered, his voice carrying the authority of a king but the vulnerability of a regular man. "Marco can handle the floor for one night."
Elena smiled—small, bright, and full of a love that had dismantled an empire and rebuilt a human being from the ashes. She slid into the opposite leather bench, the centerpiece candle between them casting an intimate, golden glow over their faces.

"I’m keeping score, Mr. Vale," she murmured, leaning across the table until her lips were inches from his. "And right now, you’re winning by a landslide."
"I have a good teacher," Ronan said, before leaning forward to seal the promise with a gentle, passionate kiss that echoed through the warm peace of the hill. The ghosts were finally gone, the winter had passed, and inside the skin of a man who had forgotten how to live, a heart was beating with the steady, beautiful rhythm of a new dawn.
