Chapter 6 - A Leak in the ArmorThe high-security perimeter of the Newport estate was supposed to be impenetrable. It featured fiber-optic motion sensors, thermal imaging cameras, and six heavily armed, former military security personnel stationed at strategic choke points around the property. But true corruption never climbs over a wall. It enters through the front gate with a smile and a valid security clearance.

It was Friday evening, precisely twenty-four hours after the shootout at Osteria Luna. Ronan was in the kitchen, a sleek, minimalist space of stainless steel and black quartzite, watching Elena attempt to teach him how to make an authentic California-style fish taco using fresh cod delivered by his dock workers.

"You're cutting the cabbage too thick," she observed, reaching over to take the chef's knife from his hand. Her fingers brushed against his, and for a brief second, the entire criminal empire ceased to exist. There was only the warmth of her hand and the rhythmic sound of the ocean outside the glass walls.

"I am a master of corporate litigation and port logistics, Elena," Ronan said, a dry, rare humor touching his lips. "I am confident I can handle a vegetable."

"Corporate litigation doesn't require finesse," she countered, her green eyes flashing with amusement as she expertly shredded the cabbage into paper-thin ribbons. "This requires art."

Before Ronan could reply, the main security alarm in the foyer emitted a sharp, rhythmic chime. It wasn't the high-pitched wail of an intrusion; it was the specific tone indicating an authorized visitor had bypassed the outer gate using a Tier-1 administrative override code.

There were only three people in the state who possessed that code. One was Silvio. One was Ronan himself. The third was Captain Thomas Vance—Ronan’s younger brother and a high-ranking commander within the Providence Police Department, who served as the primary bridge between the Vale organization and the city’s legal infrastructure.

"Stay here," Ronan told Elena, his demeanor shifting instantly back into that of the calculated crime boss.

He walked down the long, marble hallway toward the foyer, his hand resting casually inside his waistband. As he reached the grand entryway, the heavy oak front door swung open, revealing Thomas Vance. Thomas was a large, imposing man with the same dark hair and grey eyes as Ronan, but his face was weathered by years of institutional corruption and political stress. He was soaking wet from a sudden evening downpour, his trench coat dripping onto the grey marble floor.

"Thomas," Ronan said, his voice guarded. "You should have called before using the override. This estate is currently on high alert."

"I didn't call because the lines aren't safe anymore, Ronan," Thomas said, his voice ragged as he stepped into the foyer, shaking the rain from his hat. He looked around the empty space, his eyes darting toward the hallway leading to the kitchen. "The Moretti family didn't just attack Osteria Luna on a whim. They had help. Internal help."

Ronan’s eyes narrowed into slits of lethal intensity. "What are you talking about?"

"A federal grand jury was locked in at noon today," Thomas explained, stepping closer, his voice dropping into a tense whisper. "Someone inside your organization handed over the encrypted transaction ledgers for the northern docks—the ones from 2024. The feds are preparing a RICO indictment that names you, Silvio, and half the city council. The Moretti hit was designed to eliminate you before the indictment lands, allowing them to seize the docks in the ensuing chaos."

A cold, heavy weight settled in Ronan’s gut. The 2024 dock ledgers were kept in a physical, offline vault beneath his Newport estate—a vault that required two independent keys to access. One was around his own neck. The other was held by Silvio.

"Silvis would never betray me," Ronan stated, his voice absolute. "He was with our father before we were born."

"Then it’s someone closer to home," Thomas said, his gaze shifting past Ronan’s shoulder.

Ronan turned around slowly. Elena had walked out of the kitchen, holding a dishtowel, her green eyes wide with anxiety as she looked at the two powerful men standing in the foyer.

"Ronan?" she asked softly. "Is everything okay?"

Thomas’s face hardened as he looked at her. "Who is she, Ronan? Is this the waitress from the restaurant? The witness?"

"She is under my protection, Thomas," Ronan said, his voice carrying a warning tone that his brother should have recognized.

"You’re protecting a civilian while your empire is burning around your ears?!" Thomas shouted, stepping forward, his professional restraint cracking. "Are you insane?! She’s a liability! If the feds get to her, she can place you at the scene of a double homicide at Osteria Luna! She needs to be taken care of, Ronan. Permanently."

The air in the foyer went dead silent. Ronan moved so fast Thomas didn't even see the transition. In a fraction of a second, Ronan had closed the distance between them, his left hand gripping his brother’s trench coat collar, slamming his massive frame against the heavy stone wall of the entry gate. The barrel of Ronan’s Sig Sauer was pressed firmly beneath Thomas’s chin, forcing his head backward.

"Listen to me very carefully, Thomas," Ronan whispered, his voice a terrifying, vibrating snarl of absolute malice. "If you ever look at her again, if you ever breathe her name aloud, or if any of your cops so much as glance in her direction, I will forget that we share the same blood. I will bury you in the concrete of the very highway you use to drive into this city. Do you understand me?"

Thomas stared down at his older brother, looking into eyes that were no longer dead, but burning with a wild, terrifying, human fury. He swallowed hard, the cold steel of the gun barrel digging into his throat.

"I... I understand, Ronan," Thomas stammered. "I’m just trying to save the family."

"I am the family," Ronan said, slowly releasing his grip and lowering the weapon, though his gaze remained fixed on his brother. "Get out of my house. Find out who leaked those ledgers, or don't bother coming back."
