Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of MorettiDawn broke over Lake Michigan in cold, jagged strokes of grey and silver.

The heavy oak doors of the downtown Chicago Moretti family mansion swung open with a resounding crash that rattled the crystal chandeliers in the grand foyer.
Elena Moretti sat in her private parlor on the second floor, sipping morning tea from a porcelain cup, her silver hair immaculately styled, dressed in a tailored cashmere robe.
She didn't even look up when the heavy footsteps echoed up the grand staircase.
The double doors of her parlor blew open.
Luca Moretti walked in. His hands were bare, his clothes stained with the dust and blood of the night's battle, his face a mask of absolute, unyielding wrath.
Elena slowly lowered her teacup to the saucer, her aristocratic face settling into a mask of cold, disappointing disapproval.
“Is this how you enter your mother’s house, Luca?” she asked, her voice steady and dripping with condescension. “Trashing the foyer like a common street thug because of some hysterical waitress?”
Luca stopped three feet away from her armchair. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't make a single theatrical gesture.
He simply reached into his pocket, pulled out a small tactical speaker, and placed it gently on the antique tea table beside her delicate porcelain cup.
He pressed play.
The crisp, unmistakable sound of her own voice echoed across the quiet parlor:
“Pay her off. Threaten her. Erase her from the city records. If she so much as breathes a word about that night to Luca, I will make sure you share a prison cell...”
The recording looped back to the beginning with a soft click.
Elena’s hand trembled slightly as it rested on the arm of her chair, but she refused to break. She lifted her chin, staring up at her son with eyes as cold and hard as winter ice.
“And what if I did?” Elena spat, abandoning all pretense of maternal affection. “That brat was paralyzed! She was drooling in a wheelchair, a useless burden on our family name! If she couldn't walk, she couldn't inherit. I protected our empire while you were busy playing white knight!”
“You didn't protect an empire, Elena,” Luca whispered, leaning over her until his face was inches from hers. “You traded your own humanity for a throne built on sand.”
He straightened up, looking down at her with absolute, final revulsion.
“As of this morning, your assets are frozen, your security detail has been dismissed, and federal marshals are downstairs with an arrest warrant for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, extortion, and attempted murder,” Luca stated flatly. “You will spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary where no one will ever hear your voice again.”
Elena let out a sharp, breathless gasp of pure terror, lunging forward from her chair. “Luca! You can’t do this! I am your mother! I gave you life!”
May you like
“You gave me nothing,” Luca replied coldly, turning his back on her forever. “Hannah gave my daughter her life back. And today, I am finally giving Hannah her justice.”
As federal agents swarmed up the grand staircase past him, Luca walked out of the mansion into the crisp morning air, climbing into his waiting car and heading home where he belonged.
