Chapter 3 - The Director’s Mask SlipsThe ballroom dropped into an absolute, suffocating vacuum of sound.

Julian Vance froze midway across the marble floor, his expensive Italian leather shoes halting against the polished stone. The color drained from his face so fast it looked as though someone had pulled a plug and emptied him of blood.

“Sophia—sweetheart, you’re confused, you’ve had a traumatic evening—medical exhaustion causes hallucinations—” Julian stammered, holding up both palms defensively as he took a cautious step backward.

Luca Moretti did not stand up immediately.

He rose slowly, like a tectonic plate shifting beneath an ocean. At six-foot-two, with shoulders that filled out his bespoke tuxedo like body armor, Luca towered over Julian. Every movement was terrifyingly deliberate, unhurried, and saturated with a lethal, coiled patience.

“Julian,” Luca said softly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room.

“Boss—Luca, listen to me,” Julian babbled, his professional composure completely dissolving into frantic cowardice. “The foundation audit... it’s complicated! People outside our organization try to manipulate public perception—this waitress, she’s an opportunist—!”

Luca took one step forward. Then another.

The guests nearest the edge of the dance floor practically melted backward, pressing themselves against the velvet curtains to get away from the blast radius.

“Four years ago,” Luca began, his voice dangerously low as he closed the distance between them, “my daughter nearly drowned in the Chicago River. For six months while she was trapped in a paralyzed, locked-in state, unable to move or speak, you managed her foundation communications. You handled her medical correspondence.”

“I served you faithfully!” Julian cried out, sweat pouring down his forehead into his collar. “I’ve dedicated my life to the Moretti family!”

“Did you?” Luca stopped three feet away from Julian.

He slowly raised his right hand.

On his right pinky finger caught the brilliant flash of a heavy gold signet ring—an obsidian stone carved with a coiled viper.

Julian’s eyes locked onto the ring. His breath caught in his throat, a sharp, choked sound of utter despair.

“You told me she was unresponsive,” Luca whispered, his voice vibrating with a fury so profound it seemed to pull the oxygen right out of the room. “You told me every doctor, every therapist, every outreach worker had failed to find the woman who pulled her from the water. You told me the fifty-thousand-dollar hush fund was paid out to silence a tabloid reporter trying to exploit the tragedy.”

“It was business! The family’s public image—the cartel rivals were watching us—if they knew an outsider had saved the heir—!” Julian shrieked, backing up until his spine slammed hard against a marble pillar.

Luca didn't shout. He didn't lose his temper.

With blinding, terrifying speed, Luca’s hand lashed out, grabbing Julian by the silk lapels of his custom suit and lifting the grown man three inches off the floor with one arm.

“You didn't protect my family, Julian,” Luca murmured close to the director’s ear. “You protected your embezzling accounts. You used the foundation’s charity funds to build your offshore portfolio while my daughter lay paralyzed in a silent cage.”

Julian clawed frantically at Luca’s wrists, his face turning a deep, dangerous shade of purple. “Luca... please... twenty years... loyalty—!”

“Loyalty is earned with blood, Julian. You’re paying with yours.”

Before Julian could scream, Luca signaled with a flick of his wrist. Two armed bodyguards materialized from the shadows, wrenching Julian’s arms behind his back with bone-crunching force and dragging him toward the private service elevators as if he weighed nothing at all.

The elevator doors slid shut, sealing away the director’s muffled, desperate shrieks.

The ballroom remained paralyzed. No one dared to breathe, let alone speak.

Slowly, deliberately, Luca turned around and walked back across the ruined floor of scattered glass and spilled wine. He stopped right in front of me, looking down at his daughter still holding tightly to my hand, and then up into my eyes.

The terrifying underworld boss knelt once more on the marble floor—not in submission, but in a gesture of profound, unbreakable gratitude.

“Hannah Carter,” Luca said, his voice thick with a emotion he no longer tried to hide. “You kept your promise to my daughter when everyone around us lied to my face. In the eyes of the Moretti family, you are no longer a servant in this hotel.”

May you like

He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a heavy, platinum-engraved card bearing a private direct-line crest, and placed it gently on my palm.

“You own my loyalty now,” Luca said quietly. “And whatever debt you ask for, I will pay in full.”
