Chapter 3: The Ghost Returns

Chapter 3: The Ghost Returns

Rain lashed against the windshield as Cassandra gripped the steering wheel with both hands.

The black SUV followed the motorcycle through a maze of narrow streets, splashing through puddles that reflected the flashing blue and red lights behind them.

"They're still coming," Cassandra said, glancing at the rearview mirror.

Three Mercer SUVs had survived the roadblock. They were closing the distance with relentless determination.

Lily cradled Hope tightly in the back seat.

The baby had finally fallen asleep, seemingly untouched by the chaos surrounding her.

"I don't understand," Lily whispered. "Who is that man?"

The mysterious rider looked back only once before making a sharp turn into an abandoned industrial district.

Old warehouses towered over cracked pavement. Rusted shipping containers lined both sides of the road.

The motorcycle disappeared behind a massive steel building.

"He stopped!" Cassandra exclaimed.

"Is it a trap?" Lily asked.

Before Cassandra could answer, the rider dismounted and waved them inside the warehouse.

"We don't have another choice," Cassandra muttered.

She drove through the open doors just as the motorcycle disappeared deeper into the building.

The moment the SUV entered, enormous steel doors slammed shut behind them.

Darkness swallowed the warehouse.

Only a few overhead lights flickered to life.

The rider removed his helmet.

Lily gasped.

The man standing before them was in his early forties, with short dark hair streaked with silver and sharp blue eyes that carried years of sorrow.

A long scar crossed the left side of his face.

He looked at Lily first.

Then at Hope.

Finally, his gaze settled on Cassandra.

"You actually came."

"You expected us?" Cassandra asked cautiously.

"I expected Arthur."

Silence.

Lily lowered her eyes.

"Arthur didn't make it."

The stranger closed his eyes for a long moment.

When he opened them again, grief had hardened into resolve.

"I was too late."

"Who are you?" Lily demanded.

He hesitated.

"My name is Gabriel Stone."

"I worked for Charles Whitmore."

"You mean... security?" Cassandra asked.

Gabriel gave a faint smile.

"When necessary."

Lily noticed the way he carefully avoided answering directly.

"Arthur called you 'The Ghost,' didn't he?"

Gabriel's expression changed.

"So you've heard the name."

"The Chairman said you died."

"He believed I did."

"Didn't you?"

"I let him."

The warehouse fell silent.

Gabriel walked toward an old wooden table covered with maps, photographs, and newspaper clippings.

One photograph caught Lily's attention.

It showed a smiling woman holding a little boy no older than five.

The boy looked exactly like Evan.

The woman...

She looked remarkably like Hope.

Lily frowned.

"Who is she?"

Gabriel gently picked up the photograph.

"Evelyn Whitmore."

"Evan's mother."

"He said she died in a car accident."

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

"That was the official story."

"It wasn't true?"

"No."

He turned the photograph over.

Written on the back were the words:

Never trust Mercer.

Lily felt a chill run down her spine.

Gabriel looked at all three women.

"Twenty-eight years ago, Charles Whitmore discovered something his business partner, Victor Mercer, was doing."

"What?"

"Illegal genetic experiments."

Cassandra's face turned pale.

"On people?"

Gabriel nodded.

"Children."

The warehouse seemed colder.

"Victor believed certain genetic traits could be engineered to create perfect organ donors."

Lily instinctively held Hope closer.

"He tested on abandoned children... orphaned children... children no one would miss."

"No..." Cassandra whispered.

"When Charles learned the truth, he shut the program down."

"He reported Mercer?"

"He tried."

Gabriel's eyes darkened.

"But Victor had already bought judges, politicians, and police."

"So Charles failed."

"He survived."

Gabriel paused.

"Barely."

"The next morning, Evelyn Whitmore's car was forced off a mountain road."

Lily covered her mouth.

"Evan's mother..."

"Murdered."

"And everyone believed it was an accident."

A painful silence followed.

"So that's why Arthur said she was killed," Lily murmured.

Gabriel nodded.

"He was one of only four people who knew."

"Who were the others?"

"Charles."

"Myself."

"And..."

He hesitated.

"The traitor."

At that moment, the warehouse lights suddenly flickered.

Gabriel's expression hardened.

"No..."

He reached for a pistol hidden beneath the table.

"We've been found."

Before anyone could react—

The entire building shook.

An explosion blasted open one side of the warehouse.

Concrete rained from the ceiling.

Mercer commandos poured inside through the smoke.

"There!" one of them shouted.

Gabriel fired twice.

Two attackers fell.

"Move!" he yelled.

He led them toward a narrow staircase at the back of the warehouse.

Bullets ricocheted off steel beams.

Hope began crying again.

Lily covered the baby's ears.

"I'm here," she whispered.

"I'm here."

As they reached the second floor, another explosion destroyed the staircase behind them.

The only escape route was gone.

Gabriel scanned the room.

Then smiled.

"Perfect."

Lily stared at him.

"Perfect?"

He kicked open a rusted metal door.

Behind it stood an old freight elevator.

"It still works?"

"It has to."

They crowded inside.

Gabriel pulled a heavy lever.

The elevator groaned downward.

Gunfire echoed above them.

Someone jumped onto the roof of the elevator.

Metal groaned under the weight.

"They're on us!" Cassandra cried.

A knife pierced through the ceiling.

Another.

Gabriel fired upward.

A body slid off the roof.

But another immediately replaced it.

The elevator suddenly stopped.

Halfway down.

The lights went out.

Complete darkness.

Only Hope's soft crying broke the silence.

Then—

A mechanical click.

Emergency lights flickered on.

The elevator doors slowly opened.

Not onto the ground floor.

Onto an underground tunnel.

Gabriel smiled.

"They never knew about this."

The four of them hurried through the passageway.

After several minutes, they reached a reinforced steel door.

Gabriel entered a code.

The door unlocked with a heavy hiss.

Inside was an underground safe house.

Computers lined one wall.

Medical supplies filled another.

Large monitors displayed security camera feeds from across the city.

Cassandra looked around in amazement.

"You built all this?"

Gabriel shook his head.

"Arthur did."

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"He planned for everything."

"He knew this day would come."

Gabriel walked to one of the monitors.

His expression suddenly froze.

"Evan..."

The screen showed Evan leaving the hospital alone.

He was driving directly toward Whitmore Manor.

"What's he doing?" Lily asked.

Gabriel didn't answer.

Instead, he opened another camera feed.

Whitmore Manor.

Luxury cars filled the driveway.

Black-clad guards stood at every entrance.

Inside the mansion, Charles Whitmore lay unconscious in a hospital bed surrounded by doctors.

Standing beside him...

Was a tall man with silver hair.

The Chairman.

Lily gasped.

"He's already inside the house."

Gabriel whispered one word.

"No..."

Then another figure appeared on the screen.

Evan entered the room.

The Chairman smiled warmly.

Almost... affectionately.

As if greeting an old friend.

Lily stared at the monitor in disbelief.

"They know each other."

Gabriel remained silent.

The Chairman reached into his pocket and handed Evan a small envelope.

Evan accepted it without resistance.

From the camera angle, it looked almost like a peaceful meeting.

Cassandra's voice trembled.

"What is he doing?"

No one answered.

Then Evan slowly opened the envelope.

His face turned white.

He looked at the Chairman with unmistakable rage.

The Chairman simply pointed toward Charles Whitmore's bed.

Then he said something the security cameras could not hear.

Evan staggered backward.

As though the words had shattered everything he believed.

Gabriel leaned closer to the screen.

"I know that look."

"What does it mean?" Lily asked.

"It means..."

Gabriel swallowed.

"...the Chairman just told him who the traitor really is."

The camera feed suddenly went black.

Every monitor in the room shut off simultaneously.

The lights flickered.

A calm voice echoed through hidden speakers inside the bunker.

"Good evening, Gabriel."

The Ghost slowly closed his eyes.

"I wondered how long it would take."

The Chairman's voice continued.

"You always did prefer hiding underground."

Cassandra looked around in panic.

"How can he see us?"

Gabriel stared at one of the security cameras mounted in the ceiling.

"There was never a safe house."

"There was only another trap."

A loud metallic sound echoed through the bunker.

The reinforced entrance door began unlocking... from the outside.
