Chapter 1: The Bloodline

Chapter 1: The Bloodline

The pounding footsteps in the hallway grew louder with every passing second.

Lily Hart's heartbeat matched the frantic rhythm as she clutched the edge of the hospital bed. Her newborn daughter, only forty minutes old, began crying again, the tiny sound filling Room 412 with an urgency that seemed almost prophetic.

The older man in the gray suit stepped fully inside and shut the door behind him.

"Evan," he said, his normally composed voice edged with panic, "they've already entered the building."

For the first time since Lily had known him, Evan Whitmore looked genuinely afraid.

"How many?" he asked.

"At least six."

Cassandra looked from one man to the other, confusion giving way to anger.

"Will someone tell me what is happening?" she demanded. "We got married less than an hour ago, and now we're standing in a maternity ward while everyone talks like we're in the middle of a war."

No one answered.

Instead, the gray-haired man walked directly to Lily's bedside.

"My name is Arthur Bennett," he said quietly. "I've served the Whitmore family for thirty-three years."

Lily instinctively pulled her daughter closer.

"I don't care who you are."

"You should."

Arthur's tired eyes softened as he looked at the sleeping infant.

"Because your daughter is the most valuable child in this country."

Silence crashed over the room.

Even the baby's cries faded into soft hiccups.

Lily stared at him.

"What kind of insane thing is that to say?"

Arthur reached into his briefcase and removed a thick cream-colored envelope sealed with dark blue wax.

Across the front was written a single name.

Lily Hart.

She frowned.

"I've never seen that before."

"You weren't supposed to."

Arthur carefully broke the seal and unfolded several handwritten pages.

"This letter was written five years ago by Charles Whitmore."

Evan's head snapped toward him.

"You brought the letter?"

"I had no choice."

"You promised Father you would never show anyone."

Arthur looked directly into Evan's eyes.

"I promised to protect the family."

His voice hardened.

"And today, protecting the family means telling the truth."

Cassandra folded her arms.

"I'd love to hear it."

Arthur inhaled deeply.

"Twenty-seven years ago, Charles Whitmore received devastating news. Doctors diagnosed him with an extremely rare genetic condition."

Lily listened without understanding.

Arthur continued.

"The disease attacks the bone marrow. Over time, the body stops producing healthy blood cells."

Evan interrupted.

"We already know this."

"No," Arthur replied quietly.

"You know half the story."

He looked toward Lily.

"The condition is hereditary."

Lily frowned.

"So?"

Arthur swallowed.

"Every legitimate Whitmore heir has inherited the defective gene."

The room became still.

"The illness can remain hidden for decades," Arthur continued. "By the time symptoms appear, treatment becomes extremely difficult."

Cassandra looked confused.

"What does that have to do with the baby?"

Arthur hesitated.

"Five years ago, Charles underwent experimental testing."

He removed another document.

"The results predicted that none of Evan's future children with Cassandra would be compatible donors."

Cassandra blinked.

"What?"

"But..."

Arthur nodded.

"The genetics were unfavorable."

Evan clenched his fists.

"You don't know that."

"I do."

Arthur's voice remained calm.

"Because your father secretly arranged extensive testing before approving your engagement."

Cassandra stared at her husband.

"You let your father test me?"

Evan said nothing.

Arthur continued.

"But then..."

He turned toward Lily.

"Everything changed."

Lily's stomach tightened.

"I don't understand."

Arthur unfolded another report.

"Three years ago, while Evan was involved with you, Charles obtained another genetic profile."

Lily's face turned pale.

"You tested me?"

Arthur looked ashamed.

"Without your knowledge."

She felt sick.

"And according to the scientists..."

He lowered his voice.

"...there was a seventy-nine percent probability that your child would be a perfect stem-cell match."

The words echoed inside the room.

Lily looked down at the tiny baby sleeping peacefully against her chest.

No.

No...

"No."

Arthur nodded sadly.

"Yes."

Cassandra stepped backward.

"My God."

Lily shook her head violently.

"You're telling me..."

Her voice broke.

"...that he wanted me pregnant because my baby could save his father?"

No one answered.

The silence was answer enough.

Tears burned Lily's eyes.

She slowly looked at Evan.

Every memory replayed inside her mind.

Their first meeting.

Their conversations.

The promises.

The nights he insisted they had a future together.

She had believed every word.

"Were any of it real?" she whispered.

Evan couldn't meet her eyes.

"Lily..."

"Were."

"Any."

"Of."

"It."

"Real?"

His jaw tightened.

"I never intended—"

She laughed.

It wasn't laughter.

It sounded like something breaking.

"You lied to me."

"I didn't know everything."

"You knew enough."

"Lily—"

"You watched me fall in love with you."

He remained silent.

"You let me believe our daughter was created because you loved me."

Another silence.

Then he quietly admitted,

"It started as Father's plan."

Lily closed her eyes.

The room tilted.

Arthur spoke gently.

"But it didn't stay that way."

"Don't."

Lily raised one trembling hand.

"Please."

"Don't defend him."

Before Arthur could answer, voices erupted outside the room.

"Fourth floor!"

"Check every maternity room!"

The shouting froze everyone.

Arthur immediately moved to the door.

"They're here."

Evan crossed the room in three strides.

"Give me the baby."

Lily hugged her daughter tighter.

"Never."

"If they find her—"

"I don't care!"

"You should."

His voice thundered.

"Because they won't just take her."

Lily stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

Arthur cracked the door open only an inch.

His expression darkened.

"They're wearing black."

Evan cursed under his breath.

"The Mercer Group."

Cassandra frowned.

"I've never heard of them."

"You weren't supposed to."

Arthur quietly locked the door.

"The Mercer Group isn't a company."

"It's a private organization."

"What kind?"

Arthur answered with obvious reluctance.

"The kind that buys governments, destroys families, and buries anyone standing in their way."

Lily felt ice settle in her veins.

"What do they want with my baby?"

Arthur looked at the child with heartbreaking sympathy.

"They believe Charles Whitmore's death will allow them to seize control of Whitmore Biotech."

Evan nodded grimly.

"They've spent fifteen years trying."

"And if Father survives..."

Arthur finished.

"They lose everything."

Lily slowly understood.

"They think my daughter can save him."

"Yes."

"So they'll kidnap her?"

Arthur didn't answer.

Cassandra whispered,

"Or worse."

A loud crash echoed from somewhere down the hallway.

Glass shattered.

Women screamed.

The baby's eyes opened, startled by the noise.

Lily instinctively rocked her.

"It's okay."

She whispered more to herself than to the infant.

"It's okay."

But nothing was okay.

Another crash.

This one much closer.

Arthur removed a handgun from inside his jacket.

Cassandra gasped.

"You brought a gun into a hospital?"

"I expected this."

Evan pulled out his phone.

No signal.

"They jammed communications."

Arthur nodded.

"As expected."

He turned toward Lily.

"Listen carefully."

She looked at him.

"There is a hidden service elevator behind the neonatal intensive care unit."

"I know where it is."

"It leads to the underground ambulance garage."

He handed her a small silver key.

"Car number seven."

"What about you?"

Arthur smiled sadly.

"We'll buy you time."

Evan stared at him.

"You think they'll believe she's still here."

"They only need to believe it for five minutes."

Lily shook her head.

"I'm not leaving alone."

Arthur looked toward Cassandra.

"You'll go with her."

Cassandra blinked.

"What?"

"They won't suspect the bride."

Everyone looked at her.

Even Evan.

Arthur continued.

"You're still wearing a wedding dress."

"No one expects a bride to become a bodyguard."

Cassandra let out a humorless laugh.

"I married into madness."

Arthur almost smiled.

"I'm afraid so."

Evan suddenly stepped toward Lily.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then he looked down at the baby.

She had his eyes.

Even as a newborn.

His expression softened for the first time.

"What did you name her?"

Lily hesitated.

"I haven't."

"You should."

She looked at the tiny face.

The little fingers wrapped around one of hers.

"So much has happened..."

Evan quietly said,

"If we don't survive today..."

She looked sharply at him.

"...she deserves a name."

Tears slipped down Lily's cheeks.

After a long silence, she whispered,

"Hope."

The baby yawned.

Arthur smiled.

"Hope Whit—"

Lily interrupted.

"Hope Hart."

She looked directly at Evan.

"She carries my name."

He nodded once.

"I understand."

For a brief second, the bitterness between them gave way to something else.

Regret.

Then the hallway exploded.

A deafening blast shook the walls.

The lights flickered.

Smoke rolled beneath the door.

Someone outside shouted,

"Room 412!"

Arthur immediately pushed Lily toward the bathroom.

"Now!"

The doorknob rattled violently.

Bang!

Bang!

Bang!

"They're breaking through!"

Arthur took position beside the entrance.

Evan stood opposite him.

Cassandra grabbed the bassinet.

"What do I do?"

Arthur pointed toward the bathroom wall.

"There's a maintenance hatch."

Lily stared.

"I've never noticed it."

"No one does."

Arthur knelt and removed the metal cover with astonishing speed.

A narrow maintenance tunnel stretched into darkness.

"It connects to the neonatal wing."

Lily looked uncertain.

"I can't crawl after giving birth."

"You have to."

Outside, another voice shouted.

"Three..."

"Two..."

"One..."

The door splintered inward.

Masked men in black tactical gear stormed inside.

Arthur fired first.

The blast echoed like thunder.

One attacker fell instantly.

Chaos erupted.

Evan tackled another man before he could aim his weapon.

Cassandra screamed.

Arthur shouted,

"GO!"

Lily gathered Hope against her chest and crawled into the tunnel.

Pain ripped through every muscle in her body.

Blood stained the thin hospital gown beneath her.

But she kept moving.

Behind her came gunfire.

Shouting.

Breaking glass.

Someone yelled Evan's name.

Another explosion shook the tunnel.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Hope began crying again.

Lily kissed her tiny forehead.

"I'm here."

She whispered through tears.

"I'll never let anyone take you."

Not ever.

She crawled forward into the darkness.

Behind her, Arthur Bennett made his final stand.

And for the first time since the nightmare began, Evan Whitmore realized that saving his daughter would cost far more than money, power, or the empire he had spent his entire life protecting.

May you like

It might cost him every chance of ever being forgiven.
