Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last SlitherOne week later, I was discharged from the hospital. I chose not to hide in my father’s mansion or retreat to my penthouse in Miami. Instead, I put on a sharp, tailored white suit that covered the fading bandages on my wrists, wore dark sunglasses to shield my eyes from the bright California sun, and walked into the county courthouse.

Today was the preliminary bail hearing for Vivienne, Callum, and Marissa Arden.

Because of the high-profile nature of the case—and the sudden revelation that the victim was the sole heiress of the Vale Global empire—the courtroom was packed with journalists, photographers, and high-society looky-loos who wanted to see the grand fall of the Arden family.

When the side doors opened and the defendants were led in, a collective murmur ran through the room.

They were wearing orange county jumpsuits. Vivienne’s hair was unwashed, falling in greasy strands around her face, her aristocratic posture completely broken. Marissa looked exhausted, her eyes red from crying, her hands trembling in her handcuffs. Callum looked the worst—he was staring at the floor, his shoulders hunched, looking like a man who had already accepted that his life was over.

As they took their places at the defense table, Callum looked toward the gallery. His eyes locked onto me.

A spark of desperate hope flared in his face. He leaned over to his public defender—the expensive lawyers his mother had known had all abandoned them—and whispered something frantically.

The judge slammed the gavel down. “Order in the court. We are here to determine bail for the defendants Vivienne Arden, Callum Arden, and Marissa Arden regarding charges of felony kidnapping, extortion, and corporate fraud.”

The prosecutor stepped forward, presenting the medical files and the cloud-recovered security footage. “Your Honor, the state requests that bail be denied entirely. The defendants used extreme physical psychological torture against the victim to extort a fifty-million-dollar real estate asset. Furthermore, given the liquidation of their local assets due to independent commercial foreclosures, they represent an extreme flight risk.”

The public defender stood up, his voice lacking any real conviction. “Your Honor, my clients have deep roots in this community. This was a domestic dispute that escalated unfortunately due to family tensions. Mr. Callum Arden has no prior criminal record and is willing to enter a strict restraining order—”

“A domestic dispute?” The judge interrupted, her face filled with disgust as she looked at the photos of my wrists on her screen. “They tied a woman to a tree for three days without water in ninety-degree heat. This isn't a dispute, counsel. This is barbarism.”

Vivienne suddenly stood up, her handcuffs clinking loudly against the wooden table. “Your Honor! You don't understand! She is destroying us out of malice! Her father is a billionaire, he ruined our business, he threw us onto the street! We are the victims here! She used her money to trap my son into a marriage built on lies!”

“Sit down, Mrs. Arden!” the judge ordered, her voice booming through the courtroom. “One more outburst and I will have you held in contempt.”

Callum stood up next, ignoring his lawyer’s hand on his arm. He looked directly at me, his voice cracking with emotion. “Elara! Please! Forgive me! I was weak, I let my mother control me, but I never wanted to hurt you! I love you! Remember our wedding day? Remember the promises we made? You can’t let them lock me away for fifteen years!”

I stood up slowly from my seat in the gallery. The entire courtroom turned to look at me, the cameras of the journalists clicking rapidly. I pulled off my sunglasses, letting everyone see the faint scar on my lip and the determination in my eyes.

“Your Honor,” I said, my voice carrying cleanly across the silent room. “May I speak?”

The judge nodded gently. “You may, Mrs. Arden.”

“My name is Elara Vale,” I stated firmly. “The name Arden was an honor I mistakenly granted to people who didn't deserve it. For three years, I protected that family’s secrets, paid their debts, and loved them with everything I had. In return, they treated me like an asset to be stripped and a body to be broken.”

I looked directly at Callum, his eyes widening as he realized there was no mercy left in me.

“Callum asks me to remember our wedding promises,” I continued, a cold smile touching my lips. “I do remember them. We promised to stay together in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer. But you forgot, Callum, that those promises require you to see me as a human being, not a financial lifeline. You didn't just break our marriage; you watched your family try to break my life. I do not forgive you. And I want the law to take every single thing you have left.”

The judge nodded, her face hardening as she looked back at the defense table. “Bail is denied for all three defendants. They will remain in custody until the commencement of the criminal trial.”

As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead them away, Marissa collapsed into her chair, sobbing uncontrollably. Vivienne stared at me with a hatred that could no longer hurt me. And Callum let out a long, broken cry as he was dragged through the back doors, realizing that the quiet girl he had thought he could control had just shut the iron gates on his freedom forever.
