Chapter 4 - The Audit of DestructionThe luxury suite at the Vale Medical Center in Beverly Hills was completely silent, except for the soft hum of the air conditioner. For two days, I lay in a bed with high-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets, receiving IV fluids and skin treatments for the severe sunburns on my shoulders and face. My wrists were wrapped in clean white bandages, covering the deep purple bruises left by the Ardens' ropes.

My father sat in a leather armchair beside my bed, an open laptop on his knees. He hadn't left my side for forty-eight hours. The powerful, terrifying billionaire who had smashed through the Ardens' gates was gone; here, he was just a father whose heart had been broken by his daughter’s suffering.

“The doctor says you will make a full recovery, Elara,” Julian said softly, closing the laptop and looking at me. “The scars on your wrists will fade within a month. But the emotional trauma... I am so sorry, sweetheart. I should have never let you marry that boy. I should have investigated them deeper.”

“I wanted to be normal, Dad,” I said, my voice finally sounding like my own again. “After Mom died, everyone looked at me like I was an inheritance, not a person. When I met Callum, he didn't know who I was. I thought... I thought his love was real because it was simple.”

“His love was an illusion built on your generosity,” Julian said, a cold edge returning to his voice. “Do you want to know what happened at the estate after you left?”

I sat up slightly, propping myself against the plush pillows. “Tell me.”

“They didn't make the five o'clock deadline,” Julian said, a dark smile playing on his lips. “Vivienne tried to call three different federal judges she thought she owned through her late husband's connections. Every single one of them refused to take her call. By 5:15 p.m., my legal team had the eviction enforcement orders signed. The police arrived and escorted them off the property in front of all their neighbors.”

I imagined Vivienne and Marissa standing on the sidewalk of the exclusive gated community, dressed in their expensive clothes, with nothing but the small suitcases they were legally allowed to carry.

“Where are they now?” I asked.

“They are staying at a cheap, low-end extended-stay motel near the airport,” Julian replied, his tone dripping with satisfaction. “Callum’s corporate credit cards were cancelled by his own board of directors yesterday morning. Once news broke that Vale Global had seized his company’s line of credit, his investors panicked. They removed him as CEO by noon. He is currently facing an internal corporate audit for the funds his sister embezzled.”

“And Marissa?”

“She spent the last forty-eight hours trying to post on her social media channels, claiming she was the victim of a 'corporate hostile takeover.' My public relations team had her accounts suspended for violating terms of service regarding fraud and misrepresentation. She has nothing left but her debts.”

The door to the hospital room opened softly, and Ms. Vance stepped inside, holding a thick legal file. “Mr. Vale, Elara. Apologies for the interruption, but the criminal indictments have just been handed down by the District Attorney.”

I looked at the folder. “Criminal charges?”

“Yes, Elara,” Ms. Vance said, handing me the document. “We didn't just stop at the financial foreclosure. We provided the local police department and the FBI with the medical reports of your dehydration, the photos of your injuries, and a very critical piece of evidence we obtained from the Arden estate’s internal security server.”

I frowned. “The internal server? Vivienne told me she had the outdoor cameras turned off during those three days.”

Ms. Vance smiled sharply. “She did turn off the consumer-facing security system. But she forgot that three years ago, when you paid for the estate’s insurance renewal, you insisted on installing an independent, automated fire-and-safety monitoring system that records all exterior perimeters for liability reasons. The server is hosted in the cloud—and you are the sole administrative owner.”

I remembered. I had completely forgotten about that small safety upgrade I had paid for when Callum complained about the local wildfire risks.

“The video is clear, Elara,” Ms. Vance continued. “It shows Vivienne ordering the groundskeeper to tie you up. It shows Marissa laughing while scrolling through her phone. It shows Callum walking out with the leather folder, watching you shiver in the heat, and doing nothing. The DA has issued warrants for felony kidnapping, extortion, and grievous domestic assault.”

I closed my eyes, a deep sense of relief washing over me. They thought they could isolate me, break my spirit, and hide their cruelty behind the high walls of their estate. They didn't know that every single piece of their lives had been sustained by my hand—and that those same hands had just written their downfall.
