Chapter 6 - The Midnight ConfessionThe penthouse office was blissfully quiet when we finally returned from the gala just past midnight.

The glittering grid of the Chicago skyline stretched out like an endless sea of distant stars beyond the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Inside, the only sound was the soft, romantic strains of jazz playing from the built-in stereo and the gentle clink of ice in a crystal tumbler.
I stood by the glass, looking out over the illuminated lake, still processing the surreal whirlwind of the past month. From a terrified, bruised maid hiding behind a kitchen sink to standing beside Chicago's most powerful man at a high-society gala—my entire existence had been completely transformed.
Soft footsteps padded across the hardwood floor behind me.
A moment later, a warm, familiar weight settled around my shoulders as Ethan draped his tuxedo jacket over me to shield me from the cool glass.
"Penny for your thoughts, Ivy," Ethan murmured, standing close enough that I could feel the steady, grounding heat of his body against my back.
I turned around slowly, resting my hands against the lapels of his white dress shirt.
"I was just thinking," I whispered, looking up into his dark, intense eyes, "about how different my life would be if you hadn't locked that kitchen door two weeks ago."
Ethan reached up, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his touch infinitely tender.
"You would have survived, Ivy," Ethan said softly. "You're stronger than anyone I've ever met. But you shouldn't have had to fight alone."
"Why did you do it, Ethan?" I asked, the question finally slipping past my lips. "Of all the employees, of all the scandals you could have ignored to protect your corporate image... why risk everything for a maid?"
Ethan didn't hesitate. He framed my face with both hands, his dark gaze locking onto mine with fierce, unyielding devotion.
"Because the moment I saw you standing in that kitchen—broken, terrified, yet still trying to clean up a mess you didn't make—my entire world shifted," Ethan confessed, his voice dropping into a raw, emotional register. "I didn't care about the company image. I didn't care about the socialites or the contracts. All I knew was that someone had hurt the most remarkable woman I had ever laid eyes on, and I would have burned this entire city to the ground before I let anyone touch you again."
Tears of pure happiness pricked my eyes.
"I love you, Ethan," I whispered, the words escaping my heart before I could even overthink them.
Ethan’s breath hitched. A slow, breathtaking smile broke across his face, lighting up his dark eyes with profound joy.
"And I have loved you from the very first night you walked into my estate, Ivy Carter," he murmured huskily.

And then, his lips met mine.
It wasn't a sudden storm or a desperate rush. It was deep, deliberate, and certain—the exact moment two souls, forged in fire and survival, finally found their eternal home.
