Chapter 4 - The Executive PenthouseMoving from the basement service wing to the fifty-fifth-floor executive penthouse felt like crossing the border into an entirely different universe.

Instead of industrial mops, bleach buckets, and the deafening roar of commercial dishwashers, my new domain consisted of minimalist glass desks, imported Italian leather seating, quiet digital terminals, and the soft, ambient hum of high-end air filtration systems.

My first week as Ethan Caldwell's personal administrative assistant was a masterclass in corporate survival. Ethan didn't just work hard; he operated at a velocity that left seasoned executives gasping for air. Meetings with international shipping conglomerates, high-stakes real estate acquisitions across the Midwest, and confidential board sessions filled every hour of his day.

Yet, no matter how chaotic the schedule became, Ethan maintained an invisible, impenetrable shield around my desk just outside his private office.

It was Thursday afternoon when the trouble arrived in a designer pantsuit.

The private elevator doors chimed, and a sharp, brittle voice echoed down the executive hallway before anyone could announce her arrival.

"I don't care if he's in a board meeting, Marcus! Tell Ethan that Victoria Vance is here, and I don't wait in waiting rooms!"

I looked up from my dual-monitor setup as Victoria Vance—socialite heiress, daughter of the city's most ruthless shipping tycoon, and Ethan's on-again, off-again high-society fiancée—strode down the corridor with the entitled grace of a queen inspecting peasant quarters.

She stopped abruptly when she saw me sitting at the executive assistant's desk, wearing a sharply tailored charcoal blazer and a crisp white blouse.

Victoria's eyes narrowed, sweeping over my face—noticing the faint, residual shadow of the healing bruise near my jawline that makeup hadn't entirely concealed.

"Well, well," Victoria purred, a cruel, mocking smile playing on her crimson lips. "So this is the new face at the executive desk. What happened to old Mrs. Gable? Did Ethan finally retire her for being too slow, or did he upgrade to someone younger?"

I stood up smoothly from my ergonomic chair, keeping my voice calm, professional, and entirely devoid of emotion. "Good afternoon, Miss Vance. Mr. Caldwell is currently in a closed-door strategy session with the municipal transport board. If you'll take a seat in the lounge, I can notify him of your arrival once he concludes."

Victoria scoffed, stepping closer to my desk, invading my personal space with calculated arrogance. She looked down at the documents scattered across my blotter.

"Save the corporate receptionist routine, darling," Victoria sneered, leaning in close. "I've known Ethan since we were teenagers at St. Ignatius. I know every person who breathes oxygen in this building, and I have never seen you before last week. What is a little low-level maid doing sitting at the executive desk?"

Before I could formulate a professional response, the heavy oak doors of Ethan's private office swung open with a sharp click.

Ethan stood in the doorway, his tall frame radiating cold, unadulterated authority. His dark eyes locked onto Victoria, and the temperature in the entire penthouse dropped ten degrees.

"Victoria," Ethan said, his voice cutting through the air like a razor. "If I wanted an uninvited audience in my private hallway, I would have hired a tour guide."

Victoria’s haughty expression instantly melted into a radiant, artificial smile as she turned toward him. "Ethan, darling! Your secretary was just telling me—"

"My personal assistant," Ethan corrected her coldly, stepping out into the hallway and walking directly to my side, "was doing her job with significantly more professionalism than you are displaying right now."

Victoria's smile faltered, a flash of genuine shock and humiliation crossing her face. She looked from Ethan to me, her eyes narrowing with sudden, venomous realization.

"Her?" Victoria hissed, her voice rising in disbelief. "You're making a scene over a maid? Everyone in the city knows we're slated to announce our engagement at the winter charity gala next month, and you're humiliating me in front of some nobody from the service wing?"

Ethan didn't blink. He didn't raise his voice. He simply looked at her the way a general looks at a defeated enemy asking for terms of surrender.

"There was never going to be an engagement, Victoria," Ethan said quietly, his words dropping like lead weights onto the marble floor. "And as for your presence in this building... effective immediately, your security clearance is revoked. Marcus will escort you to the lobby."

Victoria stared at him, her chest heaving with rage. "You'll regret this, Ethan! My father will pull every shipping contract we have with Caldwell Logistics by morning!"

"Let him try," Ethan replied flatly. "Marcus. The door."

As Victoria was escorted out, sputtering threats of social and corporate ruin, Ethan turned his head slowly and looked down at me.

"Are you alright?" he asked softly, the ice in his voice completely vanishing when he spoke to me.

"I'm fine, sir," I whispered, my heart fluttering nervously against my ribs. "Though I think you just made a very powerful enemy in high society."

May you like

Ethan offered a faint, reassuring smile—a rare expression that made his striking features soften completely.

"Let them try," Ethan murmured. "They have no idea who they're dealing with."
