CHAPTER 2 — THE FLASH DRIVE

The mansion did not sleep that night.
Not after the ultrasound photo.
Not after the look on Adrian Langford’s face.
Not after Victoria’s carefully constructed world began cracking in front of everyone.
The guests had quietly left.
The servants whispered behind closed doors.
And somewhere inside the enormous estate, fear was spreading.
Not Amelia’s fear.
Not anymore.
Victoria’s.
Because for the first time in months, she no longer controlled the story.
Adrian sat alone in his study.
Rain tapped softly against the tall windows.
The ultrasound photo rested on the desk in front of him.
His hands trembled as he stared at the faded image.
A baby.
His baby.
Months ago he had dreamed of holding that child.
Months ago he had imagined decorating a nursery.
Months ago he had imagined hearing Amelia laugh while carrying their son or daughter through the hallways of the estate.
Instead—
He had spent those same months believing she had abandoned him.
The realization made him sick.
Someone had lied.
Someone had stolen an entire future from both of them.
And deep down—
He already knew who.
A knock interrupted his thoughts.
“Come in.”
The door opened slowly.
Mrs. Evelyn stepped inside.
The elderly housekeeper looked more nervous than he had ever seen her.
“Sir…”
Adrian looked up.
“What is it?”
She hesitated.
Then locked the door behind her.
That immediately caught his attention.
“Mrs. Evelyn?”
The older woman swallowed hard.
“There are things you need to see.”
Ten minutes later they sat together in the study.
A small black flash drive rested on the desk.
Adrian frowned.
“What is this?”
Mrs. Evelyn stared at it.
For a long moment she said nothing.
Then tears appeared in her eyes.
“I should have given it to you months ago.”
Adrian felt a chill run through him.
“What’s on it?”
Her voice broke.
“The truth.”
The study became silent.
Mrs. Evelyn finally spoke.
“Victoria threatened people.”
Adrian froze.
“She threatened servants.”
“She threatened staff.”
“She threatened me.”
His jaw tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
The old woman wiped her eyes.
“Amelia never left you.”
The words struck like lightning.
“She came to the estate every week.”
“She begged to see you.”
“She wrote letters.”
“She left messages.”
“She never stopped trying.”
Adrian felt his heartbeat accelerate.
“What?”
Mrs. Evelyn nodded.
“Victoria intercepted everything.”
The room spun.
For months Adrian had believed Amelia vanished.
For months he thought she chose another life.
Now every memory suddenly looked different.
Every unanswered call.
Every missing message.
Every strange explanation.
Every coincidence.
None of them were accidents.
They were planned.
Mrs. Evelyn pushed the flash drive toward him.
“Watch it.”
Adrian immediately inserted it into his laptop.
A folder appeared.
Security Footage.
Phone Records.
Bank Transfers.
Deleted Communications.
His blood turned cold.
The first video began playing.
A hallway camera.
Date stamp:
Eight months earlier.
Adrian leaned forward.
The footage showed Amelia standing outside the estate.
Rain pouring around her.
She looked exhausted.
Pregnant.
Terrified.
Holding flowers.
The flowers were for him.
Adrian remembered that date.
His birthday.
Victoria had told him Amelia never called.
Never visited.
Never cared.
But there she was.
Standing at the gate.
Waiting.
Smiling nervously.
Hopeful.
Then another figure entered the frame.
Victoria.
She approached Amelia.
The security camera had no audio.
But the body language told the story.
Victoria spoke.
Amelia's face slowly collapsed.
Tears appeared.
Moments later Amelia turned around and walked away.
Broken.
Alone.
Pregnant.
Adrian felt physically sick.
The second video began.
This one had audio.
A hidden recording from the kitchen.
Victoria stood speaking with two servants.
“You tell Mr. Langford she never came.”
The servants looked uncomfortable.
One woman whispered:
“But ma’am—”
Victoria cut her off.
“Do you enjoy working here?”
Silence.
“Then do as I say.”
The recording ended.
Adrian clenched his fists.
The third file nearly destroyed him.
It contained intercepted emails.
Hundreds of them.
Every single one from Amelia.
Unread.
Blocked.
Deleted.
Never delivered.
Adrian opened one.
Then another.
Then another.
The words blurred through tears.
Adrian,
I know you're busy.
I just wanted to hear your voice.
The baby kicked today.
I wish you could have seen it.
I miss you.
Love,
Amelia
Another.
Adrian,
The doctor says everything is healthy.
I bought a tiny blanket today.
I hope you still want us.
Please call me.
Another.
Adrian,
I don't know why you stopped answering.
I'm scared.
I don't understand.
Please tell me what happened.
Then another.
And another.
And another.
Dozens.
Hundreds.
Each one more desperate than the last.
Each one unanswered.
Not because Adrian ignored them.
Because someone made sure he never saw them.
By the time he reached the final message, tears were running freely down his face.
The date was two months earlier.
The subject line simply read:
Goodbye.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Adrian,
I finally understand.
You don't want us.
I won't bother you anymore.
I hope our child grows up happy.
Even if it's without you.
I loved you.
I always will.
Goodbye.
Adrian shut the laptop.
His entire body trembled.
Across the desk, Mrs. Evelyn cried silently.
Neither spoke for a long time.
Because there was nothing left to say.
The evidence was undeniable.
Victoria had destroyed them.
Piece by piece.
Lie by lie.
Month by month.
Meanwhile—
Across the mansion—
Victoria sat inside her bedroom.
Drinking wine.
Trying desperately to calm herself.
Her phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown Number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then a voice.
Cold.
Terrifying.
“You should run.”
Victoria froze.
“Who is this?”
The voice continued.
“Adrian knows.”
The line went dead.
The wine glass slipped from her hand and shattered across the floor.
For the first time in years—
Victoria felt genuine fear.
Downstairs, Amelia sat alone in the servants' quarters.
The small room felt colder than ever.
She had spent months believing Adrian abandoned her.
Months grieving a love that never actually ended.
Now she didn't know what to feel.
Hope.
Anger.
Relief.
Pain.
Everything existed at once.
A gentle knock came at the door.
She looked up.
Adrian stood there.
Neither moved.
Neither spoke.
For several seconds they simply stared at one another.
Then Amelia whispered:
“Did you watch it?”
Adrian nodded.
Tears filled her eyes.
His own followed.
Slowly he stepped closer.
“I never left.”
Amelia broke.
The words she had needed to hear for months.
The words she thought would never come.
“I know.”
Adrian carefully knelt in front of her.
Then placed one trembling hand against her stomach.
Their baby moved.
A tiny kick.
Both froze.
Then Amelia began crying harder.
And so did Adrian.
For one brief moment—
The lies disappeared.
The pain disappeared.
Only the family remained.
But upstairs—
Victoria was already packing a suitcase.
Because she had discovered something terrifying.
Something Adrian had not yet seen inside the flash drive.
One final folder.
One final secret.
A secret connected to the baby's medical records.
A secret that proved Victoria's crimes were far worse than simple lies.
Much worse.
And if Adrian opened that folder—
Victoria would lose more than her inheritance.
She would lose her freedom.
May you like
