CHAPTER 3 — The Collapse of the Vargas Empire

Within 48 hours, everything began to fall.
Agents arrived.
Bank accounts froze.
Properties were seized.
The Vargas name—once spoken like law—became evidence.
Ernesto was arrested during a private medical transfer attempt. He didn’t resist.
He didn’t need to.
He just looked at Mateo and said:
“You let her do this.”
Mateo said nothing.
But I saw it then—the fracture inside him.
Not loyalty.
Not love.
Something weaker.
Regret.
And that was the beginning of his end.
Because during questioning, one truth surfaced that changed everything:
Rafael Vargas had not died in an accident.
He had been removed.
Erased from the family.
For trying to expose his father.
And my husband—my quiet, obedient Mateo—had grown up in the shadow of that silence.
That was why he could not look at me when I was hurt.
He had been trained not to.
That night, Mateo came to my room.
The baby was asleep beside me.
He stood at the door for a long time before speaking.
“I didn’t know they would go this far,” he said.
I didn’t look at him.
“You knew they would go far enough.”
Silence.
Then he whispered, “What happens to us now?”
I finally turned my head.
“There is no us,” I said.
May you like
And for the first time, he didn’t argue.
He just nodded like a man accepting sentence.
