CHAPTER 2 — The Name Beneath the Bloodline

The prosecutor’s presence changed everything.
Suddenly, the hospital was no longer just a place of birth—it became a scene of investigation. Guards rotated positions outside my door. Phones were confiscated. Staff were questioned.
And Mateo…
Mateo stopped speaking entirely.
He sat in the corner of the room, staring at the floor like a man trapped inside his own skull.
The prosecutor opened the folder.
Inside: bank transfers, hidden property records, offshore accounts, falsified death certificates.
All linked to Don Ernesto Vargas.
And one name kept appearing beneath it all:
Rafael Vargas.
The “dead” older brother.
The one Mateo was never allowed to talk about.
The prosecutor looked up slowly. “Your husband’s family has been under federal suspicion for years.”
My breath caught.
So it was true.
The whispers. The locked doors. The missing files.
All of it wasn’t paranoia.
It was protection of a crime.
Mateo finally spoke, voice cracked. “I didn’t know… I swear I didn’t know.”
But I didn’t answer.
Because I remembered something else.
The night I copied the family ledgers.
One file had been encrypted.
Labelled only:
PROJECT HEIR
And beneath it… a second line:
If the first child survives, everything collapses.
I looked down at my son.
And suddenly understood why Ernesto had tried to stop his birth.
This wasn’t just hatred.
It was inheritance.
The prosecutor closed the folder. “We will need your testimony.”
Mateo stood up abruptly. “You can’t involve her. She just gave birth.”
I laughed once.
Cold. Sharp.
“You think I was ever not involved?”
That was the moment Mateo realized something terrible.
May you like
I was not a victim in their story.
I was the trigger.
