Chapter 10 - The Hidden LoopholeI ushered Marcus into the living room, my heart hammering against my ribs. "What loophole, Marcus? The trust bylaws are air-tight. I audited them myself."

Marcus sat down, pulling out a thick, yellowed document from his briefcase. "You audited the modern bylaws, Claire. But you didn't look at the original 1920 foundational charter established by Daniel’s great-grandfather, Alistair Bellamy."

He spread the document on the coffee table, pointing to a specific clause written in dense, archaic legal script.

"Alistair Bellamy was an extreme traditionalist," Marcus explained, his finger tracing the text. "According to Article 1, Section 7 of the foundational charter, if a primary heir is born to a mother who is actively engaged in ongoing criminal or civil litigation against the matriarch of the family, the matriarch has the legal right to invoke a 'Lineage Protection Clause'. This clause automatically transfers temporary legal guardianship of the newborns to a court-appointed third-party custodian until all litigation is resolved."

I stared at the words, horror washing over me. "Vivian is using her own criminal trial to trigger the clause. She’s creating a legal paradox. As long as she keeps appealing her criminal charges, the litigation remains 'ongoing'. And because she is technically still the matriarch under the 1920 definition, she can force the court to take my babies away from me the moment they are born!"

"Exactly," Marcus said grimly. "Her lawyers are arguing that because you are the primary witness and prosecutor against the family matriarch, you have a conflict of interest that creates an 'unstable environment' for the heirs. They’ve already filed the petition with a conservative judge who is a close personal friend of Vivian’s family."

When Daniel returned home that evening and heard the news, he was absolutely devastated. He slammed his fist into the kitchen counter, tears of frustration spilling over his eyes.

"It never ends!" Daniel cried out. "She is in a jail cell, and she is still trying to tear our family apart! I won't let them take our babies, Claire. I’ll take you and flee the country tonight. We’ll change our names, we’ll disappear."

"No, Daniel," I said, my mind racing at a million miles an hour, the panic transforming into cold, brilliant strategy. "If we flee, we become fugitives. We lose everything we’ve fought for. We beat her at her own game. The 1920 charter relies entirely on one specific definition: the matriarch of the family."

Daniel blinked, looking at me. "What are you getting at?"

"The charter defines the matriarch as the living spouse or widow of the oldest direct male lineage holder," I explained, a sharp, triumphant smile spreading across my face. "Your father passed away, making Vivian the widow. But Daniel... you are now the oldest living direct male lineage holder. And I am your wife."

"But she holds the title because she was married to my father first," Daniel argued.

"Yes, but under the 1920 charter, the title of Matriarch is not a lifetime appointment," I said, pulling up the digital archives of the charter on my laptop. "Article 1, Section 8: Should the primary lineage holder pass, and the succeeding male heir be wed for a period exceeding five years to a wife who has conceived an heir, the title, rights, and privileges of Family Matriarch shall automatically devolve to the new wife on the eve of the fifth anniversary, provided she is in good standing with the trust."

Daniel’s eyes widened as the realization hit him. "Our fifth anniversary... was the exact night she attacked you."

"Precisely," I said, my voice vibrating with power. "She didn't just attack me because she was angry I was pregnant. She knew the bylaws better than anyone. She knew that the moment I announced my pregnancy on our fifth anniversary, the title of Matriarch automatically transferred to me, stripping her of all her legal protections and her power over the trust!"
