Chapter 11 - The Ultimate DefeatThe next morning, the courtroom of the federal appeals court was packed to capacity. Vivian’s new high-priced defense attorney stood before the judge, a smug smile on his face as he presented his petition.

"Your Honor," the lawyer argued smoothly. "Under the historic 1920 Bellamy Charter, we move for an immediate emergency order to place the unborn twins into a neutral, court-appointed custody arrangement the moment of birth. The ongoing bitter litigation between the mother, Claire Bellamy, and the family matriarch, Vivian Bellamy, creates an untenable psychological risk for the heirs."

The judge looked over his glasses at me and Daniel, who were sitting at the plaintiff's table. "Mrs. Bellamy, as a fellow attorney, you understand the weight of foundational corporate charters. What is your response?"

I stood up, smoothing down my dress, feeling a sudden, beautiful kick from one of the twins inside me. It felt like they were cheering me on.

"Your Honor," I said, my voice echoing clearly throughout the courtroom. "The defense's petition relies entirely on a fraudulent premise. They claim that Vivian Bellamy is the matriarch of the family. However, according to Article 1, Section 8 of the very same 1920 charter they are citing, Vivian Bellamy’s tenure as matriarch legally terminated at exactly 8:15 PM on the night of October 14th."

The defense attorney scoffed. "That is absurd. On what grounds?"

"On the grounds of succession," I announced, submitting a certified copy of our marriage certificate, our medical records, and the timestamped video of the announcement. "On October 14th, my husband and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary. At that exact moment, I had already conceived the direct heirs to the estate. According to the charter, the title of Matriarch automatically devolved to me. Vivian Bellamy was no longer the matriarch when she struck me—she was simply a former member of the family committing an act of aggravated assault against the sitting Matriarch."

The courtroom erupted into a frenzy of murmurs. The defense attorney’s face turned a horrific shade of purple as he frantically flipped through his copy of the charter, finding the exact clause I had just cited. He looked up at the judge, completely speechless.

The judge spent ten minutes reviewing the documents, a look of profound respect appearing on his face as he looked down at me.

"The court finds the plaintiff’s argument legally sound and irrefutable," the judge declared, slamming his gavel down with a resounding crack. "The title of Matriarch and all accompanying rights belong solely to Claire Bellamy. The defense's petition for custody is denied with prejudice. Furthermore, in light of the continuous vexatious and malicious legal maneuvers by the defendant, I am fast-tracking the criminal trial to commence next Monday."

Vivian, who had been listening via a secure video link from her prison cell, let out a blood-curdling scream of pure fury before the guards cut the transmission feed, blacking out her face forever.

The criminal trial was swift and brutal. With the video evidence, Thomas Wright’s confession, and Julian Vance’s testimony, the jury took less than two hours to find Vivian Bellamy guilty on all counts: attempted murder of an unborn child, aggravated assault, corporate fraud, grand larceny, and will forgery.

The judge showed absolutely no mercy. Vivian Bellamy was sentenced to thirty-five years in a federal maximum-security prison without the possibility of parole. Because of her age, it was effectively a life sentence. She would spend the rest of her days in a stark, grey cell, stripped of her wealth, her title, her family, and her freedom.
