Chapter 2: The Thing Inside the Cast

The room became so quiet that the sound of rain striking the windows seemed deafening.

Grant stood frozen in the doorway.

Marissa stood beside him.

Dr. Foster held the cast saw.

Ruth stood near Caleb's bed.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Caleb whispered:

"Please."

His voice trembled.

"Please take it off."

Grant looked at his son.

The boy's face was pale.

His lips were dry.

Dark circles shadowed his eyes.

For four days he had barely slept.

For four days he had begged adults to believe him.

And for four days everyone had told him he was imagining things.

Including his father.

Something inside Grant cracked.

"Remove it."

Marissa spun toward him.

"Grant—"

"I said remove it."

The authority in his voice shocked everyone.

Including himself.

Marissa's face tightened.

"You're making a mistake."

Grant slowly looked at her.

"No."

His voice was cold.

"I think I've already made one."

The words hit Marissa like a slap.

Dr. Foster stepped forward.

The cast saw hummed to life.

Caleb squeezed Ruth's hand.

The vibration touched the plaster.

White dust drifted into the air.

Nobody took their eyes off the cast.

Especially Marissa.

She looked as though she might faint.

Or run.

Or attack someone.

Anything except remain standing there.

The saw continued.

A narrow line appeared along the length of the cast.

Then another.

Dr. Foster carefully inserted a spreader.

The plaster began separating.

Crack.

A piece broke loose.

Then another.

Caleb gasped.

The pressure immediately eased.

Tears filled his eyes.

"It hurts less."

Grant felt his stomach twist.

The cast wasn't even fully removed yet.

And already his son felt relief.

That alone was terrifying.

Dr. Foster continued working.

Layer after layer came away.

Then suddenly—

He stopped.

The room froze.

His expression changed.

Ruth immediately saw it.

"What is it?"

Dr. Foster didn't answer.

Very carefully, he reached inside the partially opened cast.

Then pulled something out.

A small black object.

About the size of a walnut.

Covered in dried blood.

Everyone stared.

Grant frowned.

"What is that?"

Dr. Foster placed it on a towel.

The object moved.

Ruth screamed.

Caleb recoiled.

Grant stepped backward.

Because the thing wasn't an object.

It was alive.

A large black beetle.

Its legs twitched weakly.

Its shell glistened beneath the bedroom lights.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

Then Caleb began crying.

Not from pain.

From relief.

"That's it."

His entire body shook.

"That's what was biting me."

Grant felt the room spin.

The beetle crawled slowly across the towel.

Dr. Foster stared at it in disbelief.

"This is impossible."

"No," Ruth whispered.

"It's not."

Everyone turned toward her.

Because now there was only one question left.

How had a live insect ended up sealed inside a medical cast?

Grant slowly looked at Marissa.

She had gone completely white.

For the first time since he met her...

She had no explanation ready.

No tears.

No comforting words.

Nothing.

Only fear.

Raw fear.

"Marissa."

Grant's voice sounded dangerous.

"Explain this."

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The silence was answer enough.

Then suddenly she laughed.

A nervous laugh.

Too loud.

Too forced.

"This is ridiculous."

Nobody responded.

She pointed toward the beetle.

"It probably crawled in somehow."

Dr. Foster immediately shook his head.

"No."

The answer was immediate.

Definitive.

Professional.

"The cast was completely sealed."

Marissa's face tightened.

"Then maybe it happened at the hospital."

Dr. Foster crossed his arms.

"Impossible."

Grant's eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

The doctor looked directly at him.

"Because the insect would have died."

Everyone stared.

He continued.

"For Caleb to feel movement repeatedly over four days, the beetle must have been placed inside shortly before the cast hardened."

The implication landed like a bomb.

Someone had put it there intentionally.

Caleb slowly turned his head.

His blue eyes found Marissa.

"You did it."

Marissa immediately snapped.

"No!"

The outburst startled everyone.

Even herself.

Grant took one slow step toward her.

"You entered his room."

She swallowed.

"I was checking on him."

"We have security footage."

Marissa froze.

Absolute panic flashed across her face.

Grant noticed.

Ruth noticed.

Everyone noticed.

And suddenly Grant remembered every strange detail from the past year.

Every argument between Marissa and Caleb.

Every complaint.

Every accusation.

Every moment she insisted the boy needed therapy.

Every time she claimed he was unstable.

The puzzle pieces began fitting together.

And the picture they formed was horrifying.

"What else have you done?"

Marissa stepped backward.

"Grant, you're being irrational."

"What else?"

Her breathing accelerated.

She looked toward the door.

Calculating.

Searching for an escape.

Then Caleb spoke again.

A small voice.

Barely above a whisper.

"She said Mom couldn't protect me anymore."

Grant closed his eyes.

For a moment he saw Anna.

His first wife.

The woman he had buried two years earlier.

The woman who had trusted him to protect their son.

The woman he had promised never to replace.

And suddenly shame hit him harder than any business failure ever had.

His son had been telling the truth.

The entire time.

And he hadn't listened.

A knock interrupted the silence.

Everyone turned.

One of the night security guards stood outside.

"Mr. Whitmore?"

Grant frowned.

"What is it?"

The guard looked nervous.

"We found something."

The room became still.

"What?"

The guard swallowed.

Then held up a small evidence bag.

Inside was a tiny prescription bottle.

Found in the mansion's incinerator.

Partially burned.

The label was damaged.

But not destroyed.

Dr. Foster stepped closer.

His eyes widened.

"Oh my God."

Grant felt dread spread through his chest.

"What is it?"

The doctor looked directly at him.

"Sedatives."

The room froze.

The guard continued.

"There were several empty bottles."

Nobody spoke.

Then Dr. Foster read the remaining label.

The medication had been prescribed...

To Caleb.

Grant's blood ran cold.

Because he had never authorized any sedatives.

Never.

Not once.

Slowly, everyone turned toward Marissa.

She looked trapped now.

Completely trapped.

But the nightmare wasn't over.

Not even close.

Because while everyone focused on the beetle and the medication...

Ruth noticed something else.

Something hidden beneath the mattress.

A folded piece of paper.

She quietly reached for it.

Opened it.

And immediately felt her heart stop.

Because the paper wasn't a note.

It was a life insurance policy.

Recently updated.

Very recently.

The beneficiary section contained only one name.

Marissa Whitmore.

And the insured child?

Caleb Whitmore.

Ruth's hands began shaking.

The amount listed at the bottom made her sick.

Twenty million dollars.

She slowly looked up.

And for the first time realized the horrifying truth.

The beetle wasn't the crime.

The sedatives weren't the crime.

They were only the beginning.

Someone hadn't been trying to torture Caleb.

Someone had been preparing something far worse.

And if Ruth was right...

May you like

The danger to Caleb's life had only just begun.

To be continued in Chapter 3...
