Chapter 1: The Cast That Shouldn't Have Hurt

The room fell silent.

Even the storm outside seemed quieter.

Caleb lay against the pillow, his left wrist bound loosely to the headboard.

His blue eyes never left his father.

Grant couldn't hold his son's gaze for long.

Something inside him felt wrong.

Terribly wrong.

But exhaustion is dangerous.

Fear is dangerous.

And guilt is often easier to ignore than to confront.

Marissa stepped beside him.

Her hand rested gently against his shoulder.

"He'll calm down."

Grant nodded.

At least he tried to.

Yet Caleb's final words continued echoing inside his mind.

You're helping her.

The sentence followed him even after he left the bedroom.

It followed him down the hallway.

Into his office.

Into the dark silence of the mansion.

At 2:17 a.m., Grant sat alone staring through floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-soaked grounds.

He hadn't touched his whiskey.

Hadn't answered emails.

Hadn't even removed his dress shirt.

Something felt wrong.

He simply couldn't explain what.

Upstairs, Ruth Bennett remained beside Caleb's bed.

The boy had finally fallen asleep.

Or rather, exhaustion had dragged him unconscious.

Even now his body twitched occasionally.

His face tightened.

His breathing remained uneven.

Pain.

Real pain.

Ruth had spent decades caring for children.

She knew nightmares.

She knew attention-seeking behavior.

She knew grief.

This wasn't any of those things.

Then Caleb suddenly whimpered.

His eyes remained closed.

But he whispered:

"Get it out..."

Ruth froze.

A second later his entire body jerked.

The cast scraped violently against the mattress.

And for one horrifying moment...

Ruth heard something.

A faint sound.

Tiny.

Almost impossible to notice.

A scratching noise.

Coming from inside the cast.

The old nanny sat perfectly still.

Listening.

Nothing.

Only rain.

Only thunder.

Only her imagination.

At least that's what she tried to tell herself.

Then it happened again.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Ruth's blood turned cold.

The sound was real.

Very real.

And it was coming from inside the plaster.

She slowly stood.

Her heart pounding.

Her eyes locked on the white cast.

Scratch.

Again.

A tiny movement seemed to ripple beneath the surface.

Ruth stepped backward.

"What in God's name..."

The words escaped before she realized she'd spoken.

Suddenly Caleb screamed.

His eyes flew open.

He twisted violently.

"It's biting me!"

Ruth rushed forward.

"Caleb!"

The boy was crying uncontrollably now.

"It's awake!"

That was enough.

Enough fear.

Enough waiting.

Enough excuses.

Ruth grabbed the phone beside the bed.

Within seconds she was calling someone.

Not Grant.

Not Marissa.

Someone else.

Someone she trusted.

Dr. Michael Foster.

Retired orthopedic surgeon.

Family friend.

A man who had delivered medical care to the Whitmore family for nearly twenty years.

If anyone would tell the truth...

It was Michael.

Forty minutes later, an SUV rolled quietly through the estate gates.

The storm helped.

Most of the staff were asleep.

Grant remained in his office.

Marissa was nowhere to be seen.

Dr. Foster entered through a side entrance.

One look at Caleb's face was enough.

"What happened here?"

Ruth explained everything.

The pain.

The accusations.

The scratching.

The sleepless nights.

The old surgeon listened carefully.

Then he approached the bed.

Examining the cast.

Pressing gently.

Observing.

Caleb immediately cried out.

"Right there!"

The doctor frowned.

"Interesting."

Ruth's stomach tightened.

"What?"

Dr. Foster tapped several areas.

Listening.

Then he froze.

His expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

"That shouldn't happen."

"What shouldn't?"

He looked up.

"There appears to be a hollow section."

The room became silent.

"A hollow section?"

The doctor nodded slowly.

"Inside the cast."

Ruth felt cold.

Very cold.

"Can that happen naturally?"

"No."

The answer arrived instantly.

Firmly.

Without hesitation.

"No, it cannot."

A terrible feeling settled over the room.

Dr. Foster looked toward Caleb.

Then toward Ruth.

Then back to the cast.

"What hospital applied this?"

Ruth answered.

"Mercy Orthopedic Center."

The doctor frowned again.

"That's strange."

"Why?"

"Because they don't use this casting material."

The silence that followed felt endless.

"What do you mean?"

Dr. Foster ran his fingers along the plaster.

"This wasn't done according to their standard procedure."

Ruth's heart began racing.

Something was wrong.

Something very wrong.

The doctor looked at her.

Then quietly asked:

"Who selected the surgeon?"

One name immediately appeared in Ruth's mind.

Marissa.

Dr. Foster nodded slowly.

As if he had expected that answer.

Then he reached into his bag.

Removed a small cast saw.

Ruth stared.

"What are you doing?"

The doctor looked toward sleeping Caleb.

Then back toward her.

"Finding out what's inside."

At that exact moment—

The bedroom door opened.

Both adults spun around.

Marissa stood there.

Perfectly composed.

Perfectly calm.

Yet her eyes immediately locked onto the cast saw.

And for the first time since Ruth had known her...

Fear appeared on her face.

Real fear.

"What are you doing?" Marissa asked.

Nobody answered.

The room seemed frozen.

The storm raged outside.

Lightning illuminated the walls.

And Dr. Foster slowly lifted the cast saw.

"We're removing the cast."

Marissa stepped forward immediately.

"No."

The response came too fast.

Too forcefully.

Too desperately.

Everyone noticed.

Including Grant.

Because at that exact moment, Caleb's father appeared in the doorway behind her.

Grant looked from Marissa...

To the doctor...

To Ruth...

To his terrified son.

Then finally to the cast.

"What is going on?"

Nobody spoke.

For several seconds the room remained completely silent.

Then Dr. Foster said the words that would change everything.

"I believe something was placed inside your son's cast."

Grant stared.

"What?"

The doctor's eyes never left Marissa.

"I intend to find out what."

For the first time all night...

Marissa Whitmore looked trapped.

And somewhere beneath the white plaster surrounding Caleb's arm...

May you like

A horrifying secret was waiting to be uncovered.

To be continued in Chapter 2...
