Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle ShattersI didn't look at Adrian as I walked toward the raised stage. I kept my gaze fixed ahead, my expression a mask of aristocratic serenity. The senior partners of Apex Architecture, including Adrian’s immediate boss, Mr. Sterling, were already lining up at the edge of the stage, bowing their heads respectfully.

"Ms. Vanguard," Mr. Sterling said, his voice trembling slightly. "We had no idea you were in the city. We are honored to present our final bid for the waterfront project."

I took the microphone from the podium, looking out over the crowd. My eyes finally drifted down to where Adrian and Chloe stood frozen. Adrian’s face had completely lost its color; he looked as though he had seen a ghost. Chloe was shaking, her fingers digging into Adrian’s arm so hard her knuckles were white.

"Thank you, everyone," I said, my voice smooth, resonant, and projecting a terrifying authority. "Vanguard Holdings has always valued integrity, excellence, and above all, loyalty. When we look at an architectural design, we aren't just looking at structural integrity. We are looking at the moral integrity of the hands that drew it."

I gestured to Marcus, who stood in the wings. Within seconds, the giant digital screens behind me, which were supposed to display Adrian's architectural renderings, shifted.

Instead of blueprints, the screens displayed itemized corporate expense logs, bank statements, and crystal-clear surveillance photos of Adrian and Chloe at high-end boutiques, luxury hotels, and jewelry stores. In bold red letters at the top of the screen read: APEX ARCHITECTURE INTERNAL AUDIT: CORPORATE EMBEZZLEMENT UNDER INVESTIGATION.

The ballroom erupted into frantic whispers. Investors began to step away from Adrian, creating an empty circle around him and Chloe as if they were infected with a plague.

"Mr. Adrian Vance," I said, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "You believed you were dealing with an ordinary woman when you walked into a hospital room forty-eight hours ago and demanded she sign away her life while recovering from childbirth. You believed she had no savings, no paycheck, and no family to protect her."

Adrian took a desperate step toward the stage. "Elena... please. This is a misunderstanding. I didn't know... I swear I didn't know who you were."

"You didn't need to know who I was to treat me like a human being, Adrian," I replied coldly. "Mr. Sterling, as the majority stakeholder of Apex’s parent company, I am officially rejecting the waterfront bid from your firm until a thorough criminal investigation into Mr. Vance’s embezzled expenses is completed. Furthermore, I am terminating Adrian Vance from his position as senior partner, effective immediately, for cause."

"Elena, you can't do this!" Chloe shrieked, her social climber instincts overriding her fear. "Adrian designed that project! You’re just a bitter housewife using your family's money to ruin his life!"

Julian Vanguard stepped forward, his voice a low thunder. "Silence that woman before my security handles her permanently."

Two police officers, accompanied by Vanguard's private legal team, stepped out from the shadows of the ballroom, walking straight toward Adrian.

"Mr. Adrian Vance?" the lead officer asked. "We have a warrant for your arrest regarding grand larceny and corporate fraud, initiated by the compliance board of Vanguard Holdings. Please step out of the room."

As the handcuffs clicked into place over his luxury watch, Adrian looked up at me, his eyes full of pathetic, weeping desperation. "Elena! Think of the boys! Think of Ethan, Lucas, and Mason! You can't do this to their father!"

"Their father died the moment he brought his mistress to their birth, Adrian," I said, turning away from the podium. "Take him away."
