Chapter 7 - The Morning AfterThe next morning, the autumn sunlight streamed brightly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the executive penthouse office overlooking downtown Dallas.

I stood by the glass, holding a steaming cup of black coffee, watching the morning traffic flow smoothly along the highway below. The heavy weight that had compressed my chest for three long years was entirely gone.

My phone buzzed against the marble countertop.

It was a text message from Marcus:

“Property deputies successfully served the eviction notice at 08:30 AM. Marlene and Jason are currently packing their belongings into two suitcases. Moving trucks have arrived. The locks have been successfully recoded.”

I let out a long, slow breath, feeling a profound sense of closure wash over my soul.

They were finally out.

An hour later, I drove out to the suburban estate for the first time as its legal owner.

When my sedan pulled into the driveway, the scene outside was chaotic. Two large black SUVs were parked on the street, crammed with expensive designer clothing, high-end luggage, and cardboard boxes. Jason was shouting angrily at a moving company worker, while Marlene stood near the front porch looking utterly defeated, her designer sunglasses hiding her swollen, tear-stained eyes.

As I stepped out of my car, Marlene spotted me immediately.

She abandoned her boxes and marched across the lawn toward me, her face twisted in a mask of bitter malice, forgetting for a split second that she no longer had any authority over me.

“You happy now?!” Marlene screamed, stopping just a few feet away, her finger trembling as she pointed it at my face. “You threw us out on the street like dogs! Where are we supposed to live? What are we supposed to do?”

I didn't flinch. I didn't raise my voice. I simply looked at her with calm, absolute pity.

“You have twenty-four hours to remove the rest of your personal belongings from the garage, Marlene,” I said evenly. “After that, everything left behind will be donated to local charity.”

Jason stomped over, his face red with drunken humiliation. “You little bitch! Dad never would have wanted this! You’re destroying our family!”

“My father did want this,” I replied sharply, turning my gaze to my stepbrother. “He spent the last year of his life drafting these protections because he knew exactly who you both were. You just thought you were clever enough to outsmart a dead man.”

Neither of them had an answer to that.

May you like

Jason muttered a furious curse under his breath and walked away, slamming the door of his sports car. Marlene stood frozen for a moment longer, realizing that her reign of terror, intimidation, and cruelty had officially come to a permanent, unalterable end.

Without another word, she turned around, lowered her head, and walked back toward her packed SUV.
