Chapter 6 - The Grand BallroomThe Beverly Wilshire grand ballroom was breathtaking.

Crystal chandeliers dripped from the thirty-foot ceilings, casting prismatic light across hundreds of tables draped in white silk and decorated with towering centerpieces of white roses and orchids. A ten-piece orchestra played softly from a raised dais, and the air smelled of expensive champagne and truffles.

At precisely 7:25 PM, Chloe stepped out of a black town car, sweeping through the revolving hotel doors looking like a Hollywood icon. Her custom Valentino emerald silk gown hugged her figure perfectly, and her diamond necklace flashed brilliantly under the lobby lights.

She spotted me standing near the grand staircase in my tailored tuxedo.

"Alexander!" she beamed, rushing over and planting a kiss on my cheek. "You look incredible. And you said we’re making an announcement tonight? Are we finally setting the wedding date?"

I looked down at her, my expression completely unreadable behind a calm, polite smile.

"Better than that, Chloe," I said smoothly, offering her my arm. "Tonight is going to be a night this city never forgets."

She laughed brightly, linking her arm through mine. "Oh, I love it when you’re ambitious. Let’s go inside."

We walked down the center aisle of the ballroom toward the VIP head table, where prominent guests—including local politicians, venture capitalists, and the CEO of a major media conglomerate—were already seated and sipping champagne.

As we approached, heads turned. People smiled, whispered, and raised their glasses to toast us. Chloe soaked it in like sunlight, her chin tilted up with regal arrogance.

We took our seats. I poured a glass of sparkling water, while Chloe accepted a flute of vintage Dom Pérignon from a passing waiter.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies announced into the microphone from the stage, tapping his glass. "Before we begin our charity auction tonight, we have a very special announcement from one of our most generous benefactors and board members, Mr. Alexander Vance."

Applause rippled across the grand ballroom.

I stood up slowly from my seat, buttoning my tuxedo jacket.

Chloe beamed, looking up at me with adoring, expectant eyes, clearly waiting for me to announce our marriage date to five hundred of the most influential people in California.

I walked calmly up the three carpeted steps to the elevated stage, accepted the wireless microphone from the host, and looked out across the sea of tuxedoes and evening gowns.

"Thank you," I began, my voice carrying effortlessly across the crystal-clear sound system. "Thank you all for being here tonight to support children's healthcare in our city."

Chloe smiled proudly from the head table, taking another sip of her champagne.

"Tonight," I continued, my tone shifting subtly, dropping into a cool, precise corporate cadence, "I want to talk about family. About protection. And about the standards we hold for the people we allow into our homes."

A few people in the front rows tilted their heads, sensing a slight tonal shift in the speech.

"Three months ago," I said, my eyes scanning the room until they locked directly onto Chloe’s frozen, uncomprehending face, "I prepared to bring a new woman into my life as my wife. I believed she was elegant, compassionate, and kind to my two young daughters."

Chloe’s smile flickered. She set her champagne flute down on the table with a sharp clink.

"I was wrong," I stated clearly.

A collective gasp rippled through the grand ballroom. Whispers erupted instantly between tables like dry brushfire.

"Alexander..." Chloe hissed from her seat, standing up halfway, her face turning pale. "What are you doing? Stop this right now!"

I didn't look away from her. I raised my hand slightly toward the massive projection screens hanging behind the stage.

"Earlier this week," I announced into the microphone, "my security team compiled a comprehensive audit of household activities at my Bel-Air estate. Let’s look at the footage, shall we?"
