Chapter 2 - The Mask SlipsThe air in the security monitoring room felt suddenly thin, as if all the oxygen had been sucked out by the glowing screens in front of me.

On the monitor, Chloe’s face contorted with incandescent rage as Marisol’s hand wrapped around her forearm, blocking her from gripping Sofia’s wrist any further.

"Take your filthy hands off me!" Chloe shrieked, jerking her arm back with surprising violence. She stumbled half a step, her manicured fingers flying up to straighten her silk blouse. "You forget yourself, Marisol! You are a domestic employee—a maid I inherited when I moved into this house! I could have you fired and thrown out onto the street before the sun sets today!"

Marisol didn't flinch. She kept her posture upright, shielding Valeria and Sofia behind her skirts. Her voice remained chillingly calm, carrying clearly through the high-fidelity ceiling microphones.

"You can threaten me all you want, Miss Chloe," Marisol said steadily. "Call Mr. Vance. Tell him why you want me gone. Tell him how you treat his daughters the second he walks out those front gates."

Chloe’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. A toxic, ugly smile crept onto her lips. "Oh, you think you’re clever, don't you? You think because Alexander plays the grieving widower that he actually cares about the details of what happens inside these walls? He’s a billionaire venture capitalist, Marisol. He cares about his portfolio, his mergers, and his social standing. And in three months, I’m going to be his legal wife. When I tell him you stole from my vanity, whose word do you think he’s going to take? Mine, or the hired help?"

In the security room, my blood ran so cold I thought my heart might stop.

She lied.

The missing diamond earrings. The cash in the vanity drawer. The perfume. Every single accusation Chloe had whispered across the candlelit dinner table last night—the accusations that had planted the seed of suspicion in my mind—was a calculated, malicious fabrication designed to purge the one person protecting my children.

Valeria looked up at Marisol, her voice trembling. "Marisol... are we going to have to move?"

Marisol knelt down, wrapping her arms around both girls, pulling them close against her chest. "No, my loves. You are safe. I promise you, you are safe."

Chloe scoffed, turning on her heel and marching out of the living room toward the grand staircase, her heels clicking furiously against the wood. "Pack your bags, Marisol. You’re done here."

I didn't watch her leave. I slowly lowered myself back into the leather chair, staring at the frozen image of my daughters huddled against the housekeeper who had shown them more maternal love in five minutes than my fiancée had shown in two years.

Hector stood beside me, his face grim, his arms crossed over his chest. He had worked for me for over a decade. He knew my temper, and he knew what happened when someone threatened my family.

"Mr. Vance," Hector said quietly. "Shall I have security escort Miss Chloe off the property right now?"

I raised a single hand, silencing him. My voice, when I spoke, sounded like grinding stones.

"No, Hector," I whispered, my eyes locked on the monitor where Marisol was gently wiping Sofia's tears. "Not yet. If we throw her out today, she walks away playing the victim. She spins a narrative to our social circle. She keeps her reputation."

I stood up, adjusting my suit jacket, a cold, unyielding resolve hardening in my chest.

"If Chloe wants to play games in my house," I continued, my voice dangerously low, "we are going to play by my rules. And we are going to expose every single lie she has ever told."
