CHAPTER 6 – THE LAST JOURNAL

Three days later.
Ellie couldn't ignore the feeling.
Someone was following her.
Never close enough to confront.
Never far enough to disappear.
Dante doubled her security.
She said nothing.
Instead...
She returned alone to Michael Sullivan's cabin.
Something kept drawing her back.
She searched every shelf.
Every drawer.
Every hidden corner.
Hours passed.
Nothing.
Just as she prepared to leave...
Her foot struck a loose floorboard.
A hollow sound echoed through the room.
She knelt.
Carefully lifted the wood.
Beneath it rested a leather journal wrapped in oilcloth.
Dry.
Untouched.
Protected for decades.
Across the cover...
Alexander Bennett.
Ellie's hands trembled.
She opened the first page.
If my daughter ever reads this...
then I failed.
But perhaps failure is another kind of beginning.
Tears blurred her vision.
Page after page revealed everything.
Alexander hadn't merely uncovered corruption.
He had discovered an international money-laundering network stretching across three countries.
The businessmen were only middlemen.
The real leader...
Used a different name every decade.
The final page contained only one sentence.
If Victor Hale is still alive...
Run.
Before Ellie could turn another page...
The cabin lights suddenly went out.
Darkness.
Complete silence.
Then...
A familiar click.
The unmistakable sound of a handgun being cocked.
A man's voice echoed behind her.
"Mrs. Russo..."
She slowly turned.
The barrel of a pistol pointed directly at her heart.
"I'm afraid your father left too many secrets behind."
Outside...
Three of Dante's bodyguards already lay unconscious.
Inside...
Ellie realized something terrifying.
This wasn't a robbery.
It wasn't revenge.
May you like
Someone had come for the journal.
And they were willing to kill for it.
