CHAPTER 5 – THE MAN WHO SURVIVED

One year later.
Marriage suited them.
Not because life became easier.
But because they faced everything together.
Every morning, Ellie woke before Dante.
Every morning, she stole the first cup of coffee from his hands.
Every morning, he pretended to be annoyed.
Neither of them admitted it had become their favorite ritual.
Russo Tower no longer felt cold.
It felt like home.
Ellie had transformed the top floor.
Fresh flowers.
Books scattered across tables.
Music drifting through hallways.
Even the employees smiled more often.
Some claimed Mrs. Russo had accomplished what billions of dollars never could.
She made Dante Russo human.
One rainy afternoon, Ellie received a package with no return address.
Inside was a single photograph.
A black-and-white picture taken twenty-three years earlier.
Alexander Bennett.
Michael Sullivan.
A third man.
The man's face had been burned away.
On the back, someone had written four words.
HE NEVER REALLY DIED.
Ellie's blood ran cold.
She immediately called Dante.
Twenty minutes later he stood in his office, staring at the photograph.
His expression slowly hardened.
"This picture..."
"You recognize it?"
"Yes."
His voice became almost a whisper.
"There were only three copies."
"Who is the third man?"
Dante remained silent for several seconds.
Finally...
"His name was Victor Hale."
Ellie frowned.
"I've never heard of him."
"You weren't supposed to."
Dante looked toward the rain-covered skyline.
"Victor wasn't one of the businessmen."
"He controlled them."
Silence filled the room.
"I thought he died twenty-two years ago."
Ellie looked back at the photograph.
"If he didn't..."
Dante finished the sentence.
"Then everything we believed is wrong."
That same evening...
Across the Atlantic...
A private jet landed in Chicago.
A man stepped onto the runway.
Gray hair.
Perfectly tailored suit.
Cold blue eyes.
He looked at the city lights with quiet amusement.
"So..."
he murmured,
"Dante Russo finally believes he won."
A woman handed him a folder.
Inside was a recent wedding photograph.
Dante and Ellie.
Smiling.
Happy.
Victor Hale closed the folder.
"How unfortunate."
His smile never reached his eyes.
"Happiness makes people careless."
Meanwhile...
Daniel Carter sat alone in a prison visitation room.
The guards opened the door.
An elderly man entered.
Daniel looked confused.
"I don't know you."
The old man smiled.
"But I know your father."
He slid an envelope across the table.
"If you want your life back..."
"Help me destroy Dante Russo."
Daniel slowly opened the envelope.
Inside...
A photograph.
Ellie.
Taken only yesterday.
Someone had been watching her.
Someone very close.
May you like
And for the first time since his arrest...
Daniel smiled.
