CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO RAN FROM A FUNERAL

CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO RAN FROM A FUNERAL
Victoria Kane never made it to the door.
The moment she turned and ran, dozens of eyes followed her.
Guests moved instinctively.
Not because they understood what was happening.
Because innocent people don't usually flee from funerals.
Especially not after a supposedly dead woman rises from her own coffin and accuses her husband of murder.
"Stop her!"
Rosa's voice cracked through the chaos.
Victoria shoved past two mourners.
A woman stumbled.
A chair crashed to the floor.
The chapel exploded into confusion.
Meanwhile, Evelyn Hartwell struggled to breathe.
The world around her blurred in and out of focus.
Every muscle in her body felt like it had been crushed beneath concrete.
Three days.
Three days trapped between consciousness and darkness.
Three days hearing voices while unable to move.
Three days listening to people plan her funeral.
And worst of all...
Three days hearing her husband discuss what he would do after she was gone.
The memory made her shake.
"Water..."
Rosa immediately grabbed a bottle from a nearby table.
Paramedics burst through the chapel doors seconds later.
But before anyone could stop her, Evelyn grabbed Rosa's wrist.
"Listen to me."
Rosa leaned closer.
"You need rest."
"No."
Evelyn's voice trembled.
"Listen."
The fear in her eyes silenced everyone nearby.
Even the paramedics paused.
Evelyn looked directly at Rosa.
"They took my phone."
Rosa nodded.
"They took my laptop."
Another nod.
"They deleted everything they could find."
Her breathing grew ragged.
"But they missed something."
The words immediately caught Rosa's attention.
"What?"
Evelyn swallowed painfully.
"The nursery."
Across the room Adrian Hartwell stiffened.
Only slightly.
But Rosa noticed.
And so did one of the detectives who had just arrived.
"The nursery?"
Evelyn nodded.
"My daughter's nursery."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Because six months earlier she had lost a baby girl.
The tragedy had devastated the city.
Newspapers covered it.
Television stations discussed it.
Everyone sympathized with the grieving parents.
Everyone except the people who knew the truth.
The baby hadn't simply died.
Something had happened.
Something Evelyn had spent months investigating.
Something that led directly to today.
A detective stepped closer.
"Mrs. Hartwell, are you saying your child's death is connected to this?"
The question silenced the room.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
And nodded.
The detective's expression changed instantly.
This was no longer a suspicious funeral.
This was potentially homicide.
Multiple homicides.
Across the chapel Adrian's attorney immediately intervened.
"Detective, my client strongly objects—"
"Sit down."
The detective never even looked at him.
The lawyer sat down.
Because something had changed.
Power.
For years Adrian Hartwell controlled every room he entered.
Every conversation.
Every narrative.
But now?
The story belonged to Evelyn.
And everyone knew it.
One hour later.
Victoria Kane sat handcuffed inside a police cruiser.
Not arrested.
Not yet.
But detained.
Because when officers stopped her outside the chapel they discovered something alarming.
A burner phone.
Three passports.
And a one-way flight booked for midnight.
None of which looked good.
Especially considering the circumstances.
Inside the ambulance, Evelyn finally began speaking.
The story stunned everyone.
Including Rosa.
Especially Rosa.
"It started after Lily died."
Lily.
Her daughter.
The baby she never stopped mourning.
Evelyn stared through the ambulance window.
Rain had begun falling.
Softly.
Almost gently.
"I knew something was wrong."
"What do you mean?" asked Detective Morgan.
Evelyn hesitated.
Then spoke.
"Lily was healthy."
The detective waited.
"No illness. No condition. No warning signs."
Her voice cracked.
"Then one night she stopped breathing."
Silence.
Rosa squeezed her hand.
Evelyn continued.
"The doctors called it sudden infant death syndrome."
The detective nodded slowly.
A tragic but recognized occurrence.
Yet Evelyn wasn't finished.
"At first I believed them."
Her eyes darkened.
"Then I found emails."
The detective leaned forward.
"What emails?"
"Between Adrian and Victoria."
Rosa's heart stopped.
Evelyn swallowed.
"They were having an affair."
Nobody seemed surprised.
Not anymore.
But the next part shocked them.
"They started before Lily died."
Detective Morgan exchanged a glance with his partner.
"How much before?"
"Two years."
The ambulance became silent.
Two years.
The affair existed long before the tragedy.
Long before the public sympathy.
Long before the grieving husband image Adrian carefully cultivated.
Then Evelyn whispered something horrifying.
"They wanted me gone."
The detective's expression hardened.
"What proof do you have?"
Evelyn looked toward Rosa.
"The nursery."
Again.
The nursery.
The mysterious clue.
Rosa finally understood.
Whatever evidence existed...
It was still hidden there.
And Adrian clearly knew it.
Because his face had nearly collapsed when she mentioned it.
At the same moment...
Across town...
Adrian Hartwell drove like a man possessed.
His luxury sedan flew through traffic.
Ignoring lights.
Ignoring speed limits.
Ignoring common sense.
His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white.
Everything was falling apart.
Everything.
Evelyn should have been dead.
The sedatives should have worked.
The funeral should have happened.
The coffin should have been sealed.
Buried.
Forgotten.
Finished.
Instead a maid had destroyed everything with an axe.
His phone rang.
Victoria.
Again.
And again.
And again.
He ignored every call.
Because there was only one thing that mattered now.
The nursery.
He had to reach it first.
Before police.
Before Rosa.
Before Evelyn.
Before anyone.
Because hidden inside that room was a secret capable of destroying every lie he had spent years building.
And if investigators found it...
His life was over.
Twenty minutes later Adrian burst into the mansion.
The house stood eerily silent.
No staff.
No family.
No guests.
Only empty hallways.
He sprinted upstairs.
Straight toward the nursery.
The room remained untouched.
Pink walls.
Stuffed animals.
Tiny crib.
Frozen in time.
A memorial to a child who never grew up.
Adrian moved quickly.
He crossed the room.
Dropped to one knee.
And reached beneath the floorboards hidden under the rocking chair.
His hands trembled.
Please.
Please still be there.
He lifted the loose board.
Then froze.
The compartment was empty.
Completely empty.
For several seconds he couldn't breathe.
Then a voice spoke from behind him.
"Looking for this?"
Adrian slowly turned.
Detective Morgan stood in the doorway.
Holding a small black flash drive.
Beside him stood Rosa.
And behind them...
Evelyn.
Pale.
Weak.
Alive.
Very much alive.
Adrian's face turned gray.
The detective lifted the flash drive.
"Mrs. Hartwell told us exactly where to find it."
Adrian stared.
His entire future hanging from a piece of plastic smaller than a thumb.
"What is it?" Rosa asked quietly.
Evelyn looked directly at her husband.
Years of betrayal filled her eyes.
Years of pain.
Years of lies.
Then she answered.
"Everything."
The detective inserted the drive into a laptop.
Files appeared instantly.
Emails.
Bank transfers.
Photographs.
Medical reports.
Voice recordings.
Thousands of pages.
Enough evidence to bury a dozen people.
But one file sat at the top.
Highlighted.
Waiting.
Detective Morgan clicked it.
The audio began playing.
And within five seconds...
Every person in the room realized the nightmare was far worse than anyone imagined.
Because the voice speaking wasn't Evelyn's.
It wasn't Victoria's.
It wasn't even Adrian's.
It belonged to a doctor.
May you like
And what he confessed next would expose a conspiracy nobody saw coming.
