CHAPTER 1 — THE WOMAN INSIDE THE COFFIN

CHAPTER 1 — THE WOMAN INSIDE THE COFFIN
The second knock from inside the coffin shattered every rule of logic in the funeral hall.
Tap.
Tap.
The sound was weak.
Desperate.
Human.
A collective gasp swept through the room.
Several women screamed.
One elderly mourner fainted outright.
The priest dropped his Bible.
For a moment nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody understood.
The white coffin sat in the center of the chapel beneath a massive arrangement of white lilies and roses.
Just minutes earlier everyone had gathered to mourn the tragic death of Evelyn Hartwell—the thirty-two-year-old wife of real-estate magnate Adrian Hartwell.
Doctors had signed the death certificate.
Hospital administrators had confirmed her passing.
Lawyers had already begun discussing her estate.
Yet now...
Someone was knocking from inside her coffin.
The maid stared at the shattered lid.
Tears streamed down her cheeks.
"Open it!" she screamed.
Nobody reacted.
They were too shocked.
Too afraid.
So she grabbed the axe again.
The husband finally lunged forward.
"Stop!"
The maid shoved him away with surprising force.
"Move!"
The room froze.
The expression on Adrian Hartwell's face lasted only a second.
But the maid saw it.
Not fear.
Not grief.
Panic.
Pure panic.
And that single expression confirmed everything she had suspected.
Her name was Rosa Alvarez.
For seven years she had worked in the Hartwell mansion.
For seven years she had watched Evelyn treated like a prisoner disguised as a wife.
And for seven years she had remained silent.
Until today.
The axe crashed down again.
Wood splintered.
Another strike.
Another.
Another.
Finally the damaged lid gave way.
A section collapsed inward.
A horrible silence followed.
Then Rosa dropped the axe.
Because she saw a hand.
A trembling hand.
Reaching upward through the darkness.
Several guests screamed.
The priest crossed himself.
A woman near the back whispered a prayer.
Rosa fell to her knees.
"Evelyn!"
The fingers twitched.
The hand shook violently.
Still alive.
Dear God.
She was alive.
Adrian staggered backward.
"No..."
His whisper was barely audible.
"No..."
The coffin lid was ripped completely away.
And there she was.
Evelyn Hartwell.
Pale.
Weak.
Covered in sweat.
An oxygen tube hung loosely around her neck.
Her lips were blue.
Her eyes fluttered open.
She looked like someone waking from a nightmare.
Or someone buried inside one.
The room erupted.
Phones appeared instantly.
Guests began recording.
Someone called emergency services.
The priest started shouting for help.
But Evelyn's eyes searched only for one face.
Rosa.
The maid grabbed her hand.
"I'm here."
Evelyn's lips trembled.
"Rosa..."
Her voice sounded like sandpaper.
Then her eyes drifted toward Adrian.
And terror exploded across her face.
"No."
She began shaking.
"No."
The reaction stunned everyone.
Because this wasn't the expression of a grieving wife seeing her husband.
It was the expression of a victim seeing her attacker.
Adrian turned white.
"Evelyn, sweetheart—"
"Don't touch me!"
The scream echoed through the chapel.
Every head turned.
Every camera focused.
Evelyn tried to crawl backward inside the coffin.
Like an animal fleeing a predator.
The image horrified everyone present.
Adrian froze.
For years the city had considered them the perfect couple.
Magazine covers.
Charity galas.
Fundraisers.
Luxury vacations.
Social media photographs.
The Hartwells were wealth, beauty, and success personified.
Now that illusion cracked.
And something ugly crawled out.
Evelyn pointed a shaking finger toward her husband.
"He tried to kill me."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
The words landed like a bomb.
Adrian laughed nervously.
"Evelyn, you're confused."
"No."
Tears streamed down her face.
"I heard everything."
The room stopped breathing.
Adrian's lawyer slowly lowered his phone.
The priest stared.
The mourners leaned closer.
And Rosa squeezed Evelyn's hand.
Because she knew exactly what was coming.
The truth.
A truth buried deeper than any coffin.
Three days earlier, Rosa had entered Evelyn's bedroom carrying breakfast.
The room was empty.
The bed untouched.
The balcony doors open.
She assumed Evelyn had gone downstairs.
Until she noticed something strange.
The tea cup beside the bed.
A white powder clinging to the bottom.
Rosa had worked enough years around hospitals to recognize what heavy sedatives looked like.
Her stomach dropped.
Then she found blood.
A tiny streak near the carpet.
Another beside the door.
And a third on the hallway banister.
When she reported it to Adrian, he smiled.
A cold smile.
And told her Evelyn had suffered a seizure.
The explanation never felt right.
Especially when Evelyn suddenly "died" the next day.
Especially when the funeral was organized almost immediately.
Especially when Adrian insisted on a closed-casket ceremony.
Especially when he refused an autopsy.
Rosa had known something was wrong.
She simply never imagined it was this.
Inside the chapel, Evelyn struggled to sit up.
Emergency sirens wailed faintly in the distance.
Guests continued recording.
And Adrian continued sweating.
Then Evelyn whispered six words that changed everything.
"He wasn't working alone."
The room froze.
Adrian's face drained completely.
Because for the first time all afternoon...
He looked guilty.
And someone else in that chapel suddenly looked terrified too.
A woman in a black designer dress.
Standing near the front row.
Adrian's business partner.
Victoria Kane.
The same woman who had spent months attached to Adrian's side.
The same woman Evelyn had repeatedly warned people about.
Victoria took one step backward.
Then another.
Then she turned toward the exit.
Rosa noticed immediately.
So did Evelyn.
And with the last strength she possessed, Evelyn pointed.
"Don't let her leave."
The entire funeral exploded into chaos.
May you like
And Victoria Kane began to run.
