Chapter 3: The Accident That Wasn't

Chapter 3: The Accident That Wasn't
Marcus couldn't move.
The words echoed through the evidence room like a bell that refused to stop ringing.
"What if it hadn't been an accident?"
Detective Sarah Monroe stared at him for several long seconds.
"You believe Cassandra had something to do with Emily's death?"
Marcus slowly shook his head.
"I don't know what I believe anymore."
He looked down at the photograph of Cassandra and the man identified as her father.
"I spent three years believing I knew the woman I was going to marry."
His voice became hollow.
"Now I'm realizing I never knew her at all."
Sarah immediately turned to the lead investigator.
"I want the Vale case files."
"The child abuse investigation?"
"No."
Sarah's expression hardened.
"The traffic fatality from seven years ago."
The detective frowned.
"You think they're connected?"
"I think we stop assuming anything."
An hour later, the conference room was covered with evidence.
Photographs.
Police reports.
Insurance documents.
Phone records.
Forensic diagrams.
Marcus stood silently while Sarah opened the original accident file.
"Emily Vale."
She read aloud.
"Thirty-four years old."
"Vehicle struck a highway guardrail before catching fire."
Marcus closed his eyes.
He remembered every terrible detail.
Emily had been driving home after organizing a children's charity fundraiser.
She had called him less than twenty minutes before the crash.
She sounded happy.
She had laughed.
She promised to be home in time to tuck Lily into bed.
She never arrived.
Sarah continued reading.
"The investigation concluded excessive speed during heavy rain."
Marcus frowned.
"Emily hated driving fast."
Sarah looked up.
"Excuse me?"
"She always drove below the speed limit."
She made a note.
"Anything else unusual?"
Marcus thought carefully.
"Her brakes."
"What about them?"
"Emily complained they felt strange two days before the accident."
The room fell silent.
Sarah slowly lowered the file.
"Were they inspected?"
Marcus searched his memory.
"I..."
He looked confused.
"I don't remember."
One of the investigators interrupted.
"The repair records are missing."
Sarah turned sharply.
"Missing?"
"We contacted the garage."
"The owner retired years ago."
"What about digital backups?"
"They were destroyed in a server failure."
Marcus felt an uneasy chill.
Too many coincidences.
Far too many.
Meanwhile...
Across the city...
Cassandra sat alone inside an expensive hotel suite.
Television screens covered every wall.
Every news channel displayed her photograph.
SOCIALITE UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR CHILD ABUSE
CHARITY LEADER FACES CRIMINAL INQUIRY
BUSINESS ELITE DISTANCES THEMSELVES FROM CASSANDRA REED
She grabbed the remote and switched off every television.
Silence filled the room.
Then...
Her phone rang.
She answered immediately.
"I told you not to call."
A deep male voice answered.
"You've made a mess."
"They found the cameras."
"I know."
"They searched the storage unit."
"I know."
She began pacing.
"I can fix this."
"No."
The man sounded colder than ever.
"You've already failed."
Cassandra clenched her jaw.
"Marcus suspects Emily."
Several seconds passed.
Then the voice replied quietly,
"That should never have happened."
Her breathing became uneven.
"What do we do now?"
"You leave."
"And you?"
"I'll handle the rest."
The call ended.
Cassandra slowly lowered the phone.
For the first time in years...
She looked genuinely afraid.
Back at police headquarters...
Forensic analyst Kevin Ross entered carrying a sealed evidence box.
"You asked us to reexamine Emily's vehicle."
Sarah stood.
"You found something?"
Kevin nodded.
"We recovered archived metal fragments."
Marcus looked confused.
"After seven years?"
Kevin opened the box.
"Modern forensic technology is much better than it was back then."
He carefully placed several photographs on the table.
"This component shouldn't have failed naturally."
Sarah leaned closer.
"What is it?"
"The brake line connector."
Marcus felt his heart pounding.
Kevin continued.
"It didn't break during the crash."
Silence.
"It had been cut beforehand."
Nobody spoke.
Marcus stared at the photographs.
"No..."
Kevin nodded slowly.
"Someone deliberately weakened the brake system."
Sarah whispered,
"So it wasn't an accident."
"No."
Kevin looked directly at Marcus.
"Your wife was murdered."
The room became deathly silent.
Marcus's knees nearly gave way.
He grabbed the edge of the table to steady himself.
Seven years.
For seven years he had blamed fate.
Weather.
Bad luck.
Now he discovered someone had stolen his wife from him.
And the person responsible might have continued living under his own roof.
That evening...
Marcus returned to the apartment.
He found Lily sitting on the living room floor drawing with colored pencils.
She smiled when she saw him.
"Daddy."
Marcus forced a smile.
"Hi, sweetheart."
She noticed immediately.
"You're sad."
He sat beside her.
"A little."
Lily quietly reached over and held his hand.
"My mommy used to do that."
Marcus swallowed hard.
"You remember her?"
"A little."
"What do you remember?"
Lily looked at the drawing she had been coloring.
"She smelled like flowers."
Marcus smiled through tears.
"She did."
"And..."
Lily hesitated.
"She argued with Cassandra."
Marcus froze.
"What?"
Lily frowned.
"I forgot."
Marcus's pulse quickened.
"When?"
"Before Mommy went away."
His breathing became shallow.
"Lily..."
He spoke very gently.
"What did they argue about?"
The little girl squeezed her eyes shut.
"I don't know."
"It's okay."
"I hear yelling."
She covered her ears.
"Mommy said..."
Another pause.
"...'Stay away from my family.'"
Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.
"What happened next?"
Lily suddenly burst into tears.
"I don't remember!"
Marcus immediately pulled her into his arms.
"It's okay."
"You don't have to remember anymore."
But inside...
He knew those forgotten memories could become the most important evidence in the entire case.
The next morning...
Detective Monroe received an urgent phone call.
She answered immediately.
"Monroe."
A patrol officer spoke rapidly.
"We've located Cassandra."
Sarah stood.
"Where?"
"Private airport."
"Is she leaving the country?"
"It looks that way."
Sarah grabbed her jacket.
"Don't let her board."
Officers rushed toward waiting vehicles.
Marcus insisted on coming.
Twenty minutes later...
Police cars surrounded the small airport.
A sleek private jet waited near the runway.
Cassandra stood beside the aircraft carrying a designer suitcase.
She saw the police immediately.
Her expression changed.
Sarah stepped forward.
"Cassandra Reed."
"You are under arrest—"
Before she could finish...
The roar of an engine interrupted her.
A black SUV burst through the airport gate.
It accelerated directly toward Cassandra.
Marcus frowned.
"Who is that?"
Nobody knew.
The vehicle screeched to a stop.
A gray-haired man jumped out.
The same man from the photograph.
Cassandra's father.
He shouted only three words.
"Get in! Now!"
Cassandra ran toward the SUV.
Police officers drew their weapons.
"Stop!"
Instead...
The SUV crashed through another security barrier and sped toward the highway.
Sarah climbed into her patrol car.
"Go!"
Sirens exploded across the airport.
Marcus watched in disbelief as the chase disappeared into the distance.
But something caught his eye.
During the escape...
A folder had fallen from Cassandra's suitcase onto the runway.
One officer quickly retrieved it.
He opened the file.
His face instantly turned pale.
"Detective..."
Sarah looked over.
"What is it?"
The officer held up the top document.
It was a life insurance policy.
Marcus recognized the name immediately.
Emily Vale.
The policy had been updated...
Just three days before her death.
And listed a beneficiary Marcus had never seen before.
Not Marcus.
Not Lily.
But someone named...
Cassandra Reed.
Marcus's world seemed to stop spinning.
Because seven years before she entered his life...
Cassandra had already been preparing to profit from his wife's death.

And suddenly, what had begun as a child abuse investigation had become something far darker.
A murder conspiracy years in the making.
