Chapter 2: What Cassandra Tried to Hide

Chapter 2: What Cassandra Tried to Hide

Rain pounded against the windshield as Marcus drove through the nearly empty streets.

The detective's final words echoed in his mind.

"It's much worse than we imagined."

He had heard similar sentences throughout his years in business.

Usually they meant financial fraud.

Corporate espionage.

Betrayal.

Never had he imagined those words would one day concern his own daughter.

His grip tightened around the steering wheel.

Every traffic light seemed to last forever.

When he finally reached the police evidence warehouse, Detective Sarah Monroe was already waiting outside.

She looked unusually pale.

"Mr. Vale."

Marcus stepped from the car.

"You said you found something."

"I did."

She hesitated.

"But I think you should prepare yourself."

Marcus stared at her.

"I've already watched my daughter kneeling beside a dog bowl."

His voice was steady.

"I don't think anything can shock me anymore."

Sarah looked down.

"I hope you're right."

She led him through a secured entrance into a large evidence room.

In the center stood dozens of cardboard boxes, plastic storage bins, and several pieces of expensive luggage.

Every item had been removed from Cassandra's rented storage unit only hours earlier.

Marcus frowned.

"She kept all of this?"

Sarah nodded.

"For almost three years."

A forensic technician approached carrying a clipboard.

"We've cataloged everything."

Marcus slowly walked toward the nearest box.

The first item he lifted was a framed family photograph.

It showed him...

His late wife, Emily...

And a smiling three-year-old Lily.

The glass had been shattered deliberately.

Only Emily's face had been scratched beyond recognition.

Marcus stopped breathing.

His fingers traced the ruined photograph.

"She did this..."

Sarah answered quietly.

"We found seventeen more just like it."

Another officer opened a second box.

Inside were dozens of children's drawings.

Marcus immediately recognized them.

"Lily's..."

Every drawing had been folded.

Some had been torn.

Others had cruel words written across them in black marker.

UGLY

WORTHLESS

NO ONE LOVES YOU

Marcus felt sick.

"Lily thought she'd lost these."

Sarah looked at him.

"They were never lost."

"Cassandra hid every one."

Marcus gently picked up a drawing of a rainbow.

On the back, in uneven handwriting, Lily had written:

"For Daddy. I love you."

He remembered that day.

She had proudly run toward his office with the picture.

Cassandra had smiled warmly and said,

"I'll make sure Marcus gets it."

He never had.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Every small disappointment Lily had silently accepted...

Had been carefully engineered.

"Cassandra wanted Lily to believe..."

Sarah spoke softly,

"...that you didn't care."

Marcus's heart broke all over again.

They continued through the evidence.

Another box contained birthday cards.

Every card Marcus had mailed while traveling overseas.

None had ever reached Lily.

Instead, Cassandra had stored them in perfect condition.

One card read:

"I know I can't be home tonight, but I'm counting the days until we celebrate together. I love you more than anything. — Dad."

Marcus stared at it in disbelief.

"Lily told me she never received a birthday card."

Sarah nodded.

"Because Cassandra intercepted every one."

He leaned heavily against the table.

"I missed birthdays because I trusted her."

"No."

Sarah corrected gently.

"You missed birthdays because someone manipulated both of you."

Marcus wasn't sure the distinction mattered.

The damage had already been done.

A forensic officer called from across the room.

"Detective."

Sarah walked over.

"What is it?"

"We've opened the final trunk."

Marcus followed.

Inside lay several leather-bound journals.

Each one carefully dated.

Sarah picked up the first volume.

"Cassandra's diary."

Marcus frowned.

"Can you read it?"

Sarah opened to the earliest page.

Her expression changed almost immediately.

She read aloud.

"Marcus still refuses to notice me."

She turned another page.

"Emily's death made him vulnerable."

Another.

"The child is becoming an inconvenience."

Marcus felt ice run through his veins.

Sarah continued.

"If Lily remains emotionally dependent on her father, Marcus will never fully belong to me."

Another page.

"Children are easy to shape. Remove enough affection, and they'll eventually stop asking for it."

Marcus slammed the journal shut.

"Enough."

His voice shook with barely controlled anger.

Sarah nodded.

"I'm sorry."

Marcus stared at the floor.

Every smile.

Every kind word.

Every act of compassion Cassandra had displayed...

Had been nothing more than performance.

One detective hurried into the room carrying a laptop.

"We found hidden files."

Sarah accepted it.

"What kind?"

"Video recordings."

Marcus froze.

"What recordings?"

"They were made inside your house."

"My security cameras?"

The detective shook his head.

"No."

"Cameras we didn't know existed."

Sarah looked surprised.

"Where?"

The detective turned the screen.

"Inside Lily's bedroom."

Marcus's face drained of color.

"No..."

Another image appeared.

A tiny lens hidden inside a decorative clock.

Another inside a stuffed teddy bear.

Another beneath a bookshelf.

Marcus whispered,

"She was watching Lily?"

"For years."

Sarah immediately ordered the videos reviewed.

Several minutes later, the first recording played.

Lily sat alone on her bed hugging her stuffed rabbit.

Cassandra entered carrying a tray.

Her voice sounded sweet.

"I brought you dinner."

Lily smiled hopefully.

Then Cassandra quietly removed the dessert.

"You don't deserve treats today."

"Why?"

"Because Daddy was disappointed in you."

Lily's smile disappeared.

"I'll do better."

"I'm sure you will."

Cassandra leaned closer.

"But if you tell Daddy we talked..."

She smiled.

"...he'll think you're lying."

Marcus couldn't watch anymore.

He turned away.

His hands were trembling.

Sarah placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.

"There's more."

Marcus looked at her.

"What else could there possibly be?"

She hesitated.

"We found financial records."

He frowned.

"What about them?"

"Cassandra transferred money every month."

"How much?"

"Small amounts."

"To whom?"

Sarah handed him several bank statements.

The recipient name appeared repeatedly.

Bright Future Children's Foundation.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

"I've donated millions there."

Sarah nodded.

"So have many others."

She lowered her voice.

"The foundation doesn't exist."

Marcus looked up sharply.

"What?"

"It never existed."

He stared at the paperwork.

"Then where did the money go?"

"We're tracing it."

Another detective approached carrying an old envelope.

"This was hidden beneath the false bottom of one suitcase."

Sarah carefully opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Marcus took it.

The picture showed Cassandra standing beside an older man.

Neither of them noticed they were being photographed.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

Everything begins when the wife is gone.

Marcus's breathing became uneven.

"Who is he?"

Sarah looked toward another investigator.

"We're running facial recognition."

The computer beeped only seconds later.

The technician looked stunned.

"Detective..."

Sarah walked over.

"What?"

"The man has a criminal history."

Marcus stepped closer.

"For what?"

The technician swallowed.

"Fraud."

Silence.

"Identity theft."

Another pause.

"And..."

He looked toward Marcus.

"...he's Cassandra's biological father."

Marcus stared at the screen.

For years Cassandra had claimed both of her parents died when she was young.

Another lie.

Another carefully constructed illusion.

Sarah quietly closed the file.

"I don't think Cassandra entered your life by accident."

Marcus slowly nodded.

Neither did he.

This wasn't a romance gone wrong.

It was a carefully planned infiltration.

A long game.

Months...

Perhaps years...

Designed to gain his trust, his fortune, and complete control over his family.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

It was Dr. Helen Brooks.

Marcus answered immediately.

"Is Lily okay?"

There was a brief silence.

"Physically, yes."

Marcus frowned.

"What happened?"

"Lily remembered something today after you left."

His heartbeat quickened.

"What did she remember?"

Dr. Brooks spoke carefully.

"She said Cassandra used to tell her..."

Another pause.

"...that accidents happen to mothers who aren't careful."

Marcus's blood ran cold.

He slowly lowered the phone.

Emily.

His late wife.

She had died in what everyone believed was a tragic car accident.

For the first time...

Marcus found himself asking the question he never thought possible.

What if it hadn't been an accident at all?

Across the evidence room, Detective Monroe watched his expression change.

"What is it?"

Marcus looked up.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"I think..."

He swallowed hard.

"...we've been investigating the wrong crime."

The room fell silent.

Because suddenly...

May you like

The woman they believed was guilty of child abuse...

Might also be connected to a death that had remained unexplained for seven long years.
