Chapter 6 - The Imperial CleansingThe signing of the restructuring documents was completed in a silence so thick it felt like a tomb. Daniel’s signature was jagged, his hand shaking so violently the pen tore through the paper on the final stroke. Margaret didn't sign; she didn't need to. Her son held the primary power of attorney for the family firm, a legal vulnerability Richard’s team had exploited with surgical precision.

"Excellent," Major Cho said, picking up the documents and placing them neatly back into her portfolio. "The Hayes Development Group is officially a subsidiary of Bennett Global. Effective immediately, all corporate credit cards issued to Margaret Hayes and her associates are deactivated. The luxury vehicles currently registered to the firm will be recovered by asset repossession teams within the hour."

Margaret snapped her head up, her eyes burning with a desperate, venomous hatred. "You’re throwing us onto the street? Just like that? We have a position in this city, Richard!"

"Your position is currently in the holding cells of the Lew Sterrett Justice Center, Margaret," Richard said, turning his back on her as the heavy double doors of the penthouse opened once more.

This time, it wasn't private security. Four state investigators from the Texas Rangers, accompanied by two federal marshals, marched into the room. The lead investigator, a tall man with a silver star pinned to his leather vest, looked at the group with absolute professional detachment.

"Margaret Hayes? Daniel Hayes?" the investigator asked.

"Yes," Daniel whispered from the floor.

"You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, conspiracy to commit extortion, and felony aggravated assault involving domestic violence," the Ranger announced, pulling out sets of heavy steel handcuffs.

The six women who had participated in the beating began to shriek as additional officers stepped in, clicking the cuffs around their manicured wrists. Margaret didn't shriek. She stood rigid as the steel locked around her gold bracelets, her emerald green suit suddenly looking like a grotesque parody of wealth. As she was led past Emily, she stopped, leaning in with a hiss. "You think you won, you little—"

An officer violently jerked her forward. "Keep moving, ma'am. Don't speak to the victim."

We watched as the entire Hayes dynasty was marched out of the Ritz-Carlton penthouse in chains, their faces captured by three independent news crews that Richard’s public relations team had conveniently tipped off. By the noon broadcast, the names Margaret and Daniel Hayes would be synonymous with the largest white-collar and domestic violence scandal in modern Dallas history.

When the room finally emptied, leaving only our family and the private security detail, Richard turned around. He looked at me, then at Emily. The fierce, terrifying aura of the corporate executioner melted away, leaving behind a man who looked older, tired, but deeply, profoundly relieved.

"Let’s go home," Richard said softly. "The real home."
