Chapter 5 - The DismantlingRichard took a slow step around the table, his eyes never leaving Margaret’s pale face. "You wanted my daughter's condo, Margaret. You wanted a $1.8 million asset to save your pathetic, bankrupt family name. Let me show you what happens when you try to steal from a Bennett."

He pulled a black pen from his jacket pocket and tossed it onto the glass table. It slid with a metallic clink, stopping right in front of Daniel.
"This is a voluntary restructuring agreement," Major Cho announced. "You will immediately sign over one hundred percent of the equity in Hayes Development Group to the Bennett Family Trust for the sum of one dollar. In exchange, Bennett Global Capitals will absorb the twenty-four million dollars in liabilities, preventing your family from entering federal prison for corporate fraud regarding the charity skimming we discovered your mother has been doing for the last three years."
"Charity skimming?" Daniel turned to his mother, his eyes wide with horror. "Mom, what is she talking about?"
Margaret’s aristocratic composure completely shattered. Her mouth twisted into a snarl, the ugly, violent woman from the hotel suite bursting through the Chanel facade. "You think you can ruin us, Richard? I know the District Attorney! I’ve hosted fundraisers for the Mayor! You cannot come into this hotel and dictate terms to me!"
"The District Attorney just recused himself from your son's cases ten minutes ago, Margaret," Richard said calmly, looking at his watch. "Because at 8:15 AM, my security team delivered the forensic medical reports, the audio recordings, and the financial audit files directly to the Texas Rangers and the federal prosecutor’s office. You see, when a criminal prosecutor handles federal drug asset forfeitures while his mother is using those exact same banks to launder skimmed charity funds... it becomes a RICO case. The local boys can't protect you anymore."
Daniel fell to his knees, his hands gripping the edge of the glass table just like Ryan had in Emily’s worst memories. "Please, Mr. Bennett... Richard... I didn't touch her. I swear to God I didn't lay a hand on her! I was just trying to keep my mother calm! Don't destroy my career. I worked so hard for that degree!"
"You stood outside a door while six grown women beat your wife bloody, Daniel," I spoke up, my voice shaking with a mother’s pure, unadulterated fury as I stepped forward, pulling Emily closer to my side. "You told them not to hit her in the face because you were worried about the aesthetic of a wedding brunch. You are worse than a monster. You are a coward."

Emily looked down at the man she had promised to love for the rest of her life. The realization that the polished, perfect prince was nothing but a hollow, desperate parasite was complete. "Sign the papers, Daniel," she said, her voice steady and clear for the first time since she knocked on my door. "Sign them before my father decides to take the clothes off your back too."
Daniel looked at his mother, whose eyes were staring blankly at the floor, realizing the empire she had spent her life maintaining had been liquidated in less than six hours. With trembling fingers, Daniel reached for the black pen.
