CHAPTER 4 The Wedding That Never Happened

CHAPTER 4
The Wedding That Never Happened
By Saturday afternoon, the rain had stopped.
The skies above Hawthorne Estate were impossibly blue, as if the world itself had decided to cooperate with Ethan Calloway's perfect day.
Luxury cars lined the long driveway.
Valets hurried from vehicle to vehicle.
Reporters waited outside the gates, hoping to photograph another high-profile wedding between two successful young executives.
Inside the ballroom, crystal chandeliers reflected thousands of tiny lights across polished marble floors.
White roses covered every table.
A string quartet rehearsed near the grand staircase.
Everything looked flawless.
Exactly as Ethan wanted.
Exactly as Vanessa demanded.
Neither of them knew federal investigators were less than twenty minutes away.
Across town, I stood in front of my bedroom mirror.
Benjamin slept peacefully in the portable bassinet my mother had insisted I buy before leaving the hospital.
She folded another tiny blanket and looked at me.
"You're really going?"
I nodded.
"I have to."
"You don't owe Ethan anything."
"I'm not going for Ethan."
She understood immediately.
"Grace."
"And the truth."
I chose a simple navy-blue dress.
No diamonds.
No dramatic makeup.
No attempt to compete with the bride.
Today wasn't about revenge.
It was about witnesses.
My father always used to say,
"Truth survives best when other people see it with their own eyes."
I finally understood what he meant.
Grace arrived exactly at two-thirty.
She carried a leather briefcase instead of a purse.
"You brought everything?"
She patted the case.
"Three encrypted drives."
"Original financial records."
"Signed affidavits."
"And copies already filed with federal prosecutors."
I raised an eyebrow.
"So even if someone destroys these..."
"They've already lost."
Before leaving, I looked down at Benjamin.
He stretched in his sleep, one tiny fist resting against his cheek.
I leaned over and kissed his forehead.
"I'll be back soon."
My mother smiled softly.
"He'll be waiting."
Hawthorne Estate looked exactly the way Ethan had once described his dream wedding.
Grand.
Elegant.
Expensive.
As Grace parked across the street, I noticed television vans setting up near the entrance.
"This is bigger than I expected."
She nodded.
"Calloway Capital sponsors half the city's business charities."
"Everyone important is here."
I looked toward the gates.
"So they'll all watch."
Inside the ballroom, Ethan adjusted his cufflinks while his best man laughed.
"Nervous?"
Ethan smiled confidently.
"Not at all."
"You finally found the right woman."
"I did."
"What about Olivia?"
He shrugged.
"Some people belong in your past."
His best man nodded.
"You made the right choice."
Ethan believed him.
Across the bridal suite, Vanessa stared into the mirror while a makeup artist applied the final touches.
One bridesmaid laughed.
"You hit the jackpot."
Vanessa smiled.
"I suppose I did."
Another bridesmaid whispered,
"Ethan adores you."
Vanessa's smile remained perfect.
If anyone had looked closely...
They might have noticed she never actually answered.
At precisely three-fifteen, the ceremony coordinator approached Ethan.
"There's a guest asking for you."
"Who?"
"She didn't give a name."
Ethan frowned.
"Describe her."
"Navy-blue dress."
Dark hair.
Calm.
His expression changed instantly.
"Olivia."
He hurried toward the entrance.
The moment he saw me standing beside Grace, surprise flashed across his face.
"You came."
"I said I wouldn't."
"You changed your mind."
I smiled politely.
"No."
"I came for a different reason."
His eyes briefly settled on Grace.
"And who's this?"
"My attorney."
The smile disappeared from his face.
"What is this?"
His voice became quieter.
"You're bringing a lawyer to my wedding?"
Grace answered before I could.
"We won't interrupt your ceremony."
"Good."
"But we'll stay."
Ethan forced a laugh.
"Still dramatic."
I simply looked at him.
He still had no idea.
Before he could ask another question, Vanessa appeared.
She wore a breathtaking white gown with a cathedral-length veil.
Guests nearby gasped.
She looked every bit the perfect bride.
Her eyes landed on me.
For one brief second...
Something unexpected crossed her face.
Not satisfaction.
Not pity.
Fear.
It vanished almost instantly.
She walked forward with flawless composure.
"Olivia."
Her voice sounded warm.
"I'm so glad you came."
I smiled.
"So am I."
She extended her hand.
I noticed the slightest tremble in her fingers.
"Nervous?" I asked.
She laughed.
"A little."
"You should be."
Her smile froze.
"What do you mean?"
I looked directly into her eyes.
"I know what happens after the vows."
Color drained from her face.
Only for an instant.
Then she recovered.
"I think you've misunderstood something."
"Maybe."
I answered softly.
"We'll find out soon."
Grace leaned toward me.
"Did you see that?"
I nodded.
"She knows."
The ceremony began minutes later.
Guests rose as the music filled the hall.
Vanessa walked gracefully down the aisle.
Ethan waited beneath an enormous arch covered in white roses.
To everyone else...
It looked like a fairy tale.
To me...
It looked like a countdown.
The officiant smiled.
"We are gathered here today..."
I barely heard him.
Instead, I watched the back entrance.
Exactly where Grace told me to look.
Five minutes passed.
Nothing.
Then...
The ballroom doors quietly opened.
Not dramatically.
Not with shouting.
Just enough for six people in dark business suits to enter.
None wore uniforms.
None carried weapons openly.
They looked like ordinary guests.
Except they weren't guests.
Grace whispered,
"They're here."
The ceremony continued.
"Ethan, do you take..."
Before he could answer, one of the suited men touched an earpiece.
He nodded once.
Then another.
Then another.
Grace frowned.
"That's strange."
"What?"
"They're waiting."
"For what?"
She checked her watch.
"Someone important hasn't arrived yet."
At that exact moment, another black sedan pulled into the estate.
A distinguished older man stepped out carrying a polished leather briefcase.
The security team at the gate immediately waved him through without checking identification.
Grace's expression changed completely.
"Oh no..."
"What?"
She whispered only two words.
"Richard Mercer."
"Who's that?"
"The real owner..."
She swallowed hard.
"...of Calloway Capital."
I stared at her.
"What?"
"Ethan thinks he's the CEO."
"He isn't."
"Richard Mercer has controlled everything from behind the scenes for years."
Inside the ballroom, Ethan smiled as the officiant asked him once again,
"Do you take Vanessa Brooks..."
He never had the chance to answer.
Because at that precise moment, the grand ballroom doors swung open.
A clear, commanding voice echoed through the silent room.
"Federal agents."
"No one leave the building."
Every guest turned.
Richard Mercer stopped walking.
The smile vanished from Vanessa's face.
Ethan looked completely confused.
Grace quietly opened her briefcase.
I took a slow breath.
The countdown was over.
The collapse had begun.
May you like
And Ethan was about to discover that his wedding had never been the destination.
It had always been the trap.
